Ford leaves Washington
Fire and Water
The Texas A&M University water tower and the smoke stack
standing next to it are two dominant structures on our cam
pus and are shown here on a clear winter’s night. The water
tower, which supplies all the water for the University is 183
ft. — 3 in. tall with the water level at 170 ft. It holds 2 million
gallons of water and has a diameter of 100 ft. at its base. The
smoke stack is 204 ft.-6 in. tall and is used to take burnt gas
off of two University furnaces. Battalion photo by Kevin Venner

MONTEREY, Calif. — Gerald R.
Ford, America’s 38th “yesterday’s”
president, patted his golden re
trievers to calm them and smiled at
his new chief of staff, a former field
artilleryman with a crew cut image,
who was trying to hide tear-
reddened eyes.
Air Force 26000, the former Air
Force One on which Lyndon
Johnson took the presidential oath
the day John Kennedy died in Dal
las, prepared for takeoff at 12:15
p.m. CST, yesterday at Andrews
Air Force Base outside Washington.
Betty Ford strapped herself into
her chair in the eight-seat executive
lounge and looked at her husband.
Ford, once put down by capital
wits as a football player without a
helmet but later known as the Mr.
Nice Guy who — as President Car
ter acknowledged in his inaugural
speech — healed our land after
Richard Nixon wounded it, was
leaving Washington.
The two dogs, Liberty and Misty,
whined. They had never traveled
aboard a plane, and the noise of the
707 engines undid them. They
jumped, leaped and whirled.
“It’s been a great 2V2 years,” Ford
said to his wife.
“And now?” she asked.
“I’m looking forward to the great
challenge of the future,” he said.
After lunch, Ford asked his staff
chief, Robert Barrett, to invite for
ward four reporters who had cov
ered him for years. They are repre
sentatives of the New York Times,
CBS, Newsweek and UPI.
Among other things. Ford said:
V He would not run for the House
or Senate, but would stay in a posi
tion to seek the presidential nomi
nation for president in 1980. “I am
not ruling out any option,” he said.
V Carter faces five or six major
decisions in coming months he said,
Top cadet accepts award
Texas A&M University was pres

It was won by 80 A&M cadets for

given to the top ROTC graduate in
the nation.
A&M military officials believe it
is probably the first time that the
nation’s two top Army ROTC
awards are held simultaneously by
the same institution.
The trophy was presented yes
terday for the Secretary of the Army
by Brig. Gen. Gerald Childress,
commander of the Third Army
ROTC Region, Ft. Riley
It was accepted for the Class of
1977 cadets by John L. “Jack” Bal-
lantyne, senior from El Paso. Bal-
lantyne was among top Army cadets
for 1976 summer camps at Ft. Riley,
Bragg, Washington and Benning.
The Warrior of the Pacific Trophy
was displayed alongside the 1976
Camp Commanders Trophy, requi
site to consideration for the former,
and the Hughes Trophy annually
The trophy presented at yester
day’s ceremonies has been given
since 1925. Senior ROTC colleges
and universities with 20 or more
cadets at summer field training are
eligible to compete for the award
approved by the Department of the
Army.
It is given for the best overall
score computed from individual
cadet performance evaluations.
Presentation of the trophy here
marks the first time it has been won
by an institution in the state of
Texas.

and, “There will be real trouble if
the wrong decisions are made.”
V The GOP can win congressional
seats in the 1978 elections if they
don’t “get into one of those dog
fights” among themselves. Ford
said.
Ford wept at Carter’s inaugural.
Later he sat in the plane and talked
of the thunder of applause he got
when introduced at the ceremony.
“I couldn’t help feeling that 99
per cent of those people voted for
President Carter and yet were very
genuine in their applause,” he said.
Carter’s opening words — “I want
to thank my predecessor for all he’s
done to heal our land” — had un
raveled the Ford reserve.
David Kennerly sat reading and
re-reading the letter his great friend
had given him on his resignation as
White House photographer. Ford
wrote:
“I want to say . . . it’s been fun.
In addition to being the world’s best
photographer, you have an uncanny
ability to put people at ease, to
bring out their best.”
The photographer smiled, put the
letter in a pocket, picked up a cam
era and went to Ford. His old boss
laughed at the sight of him.
Traffic lights installed
on South College Avenue
“The common motto of the other
schools is ‘beat the Aggies.’
More traffic lights are being
added and traffic is being rechan
neled on South College Avenue
from the intersection with Sulphur
Springs Road to Brookside Drive.
A two way left turn median is
being provided from just north of
the Old College Road and Pleasant
Street intersection south to College
View. In addition to the two way left
turn median, four lanes will be avail
able for traffic as in the past.
Motorists should be alert to the
changes in the pavement markings
and channelization in this area, and
exercise caution when driving
through the work area.
Particualr attention is directed to
the channelization at the intersec
tion of South College Avenue and
Old College Road because south
bound traffic on College Avenue will
be required to reduce their speed
prior to making their turning ma
neuver onto Old College Road.
high standard of achievement,”
Gen. Childress said, citing Aggies’
accomplishments at Ft. Riley last
summer. He noted that the 80
cadets qualified in physical training
at an average test score of 451,
which is no small accomplishment.
“Seventy of you won the Recondo
badge, a larger percentage than any
other school,” the general added.
“You had the camp’s outstanding
cadet in Jack Ballantyne,” for which
he received in Washington an Army
ROTC Leadership certificate and a
$1,000 savings bond.
The general also remarked on ac
ceptance of 33 of 34 Army cadets at
A&M recommended for Regular
Army commissions. “You don’t find
that happening at any other univer
sity,” Gen. Childress said.
