Sooners search for winning ways in Missouri
m
United Press International
\NSAS CITY, Mo. — His team
las lost five of its last six basketball
;ames, but Oklahoma coach Dave
llts says it is only a matter of time
■ore the Sooners become consis-
en 1 winners.
■There are some obvious
hortcomings, but they are all based
>n|inexpereince,” said Bliss, whose
jn opened the season with seven
ight wins. “Everybody thought
were going to have a great team
this year, but I felt all along this was
just another rebuilding year. Very
few teams in the country are as inex
perienced as we are.”
As the Sooners prepare for a Big
Eight Conference game today at
Missouri, Bliss is toying with the
idea of using as many as three
freshmen in his starting lineup. Nine
of the top 12 players on the Sooner
squad are either freshmen or
sophomores.
In other league games today, Kan
sas hosts Oklahoma State and Kansas
State hosts Iowa State in games
featuring teams that won their
league openers. Colorado visits Ne
braska.
“Some of the teams around this
league have been together for a
couple of years, but we’ve only been
a team for a couple of months,” said
Bliss, whose squad is 8-5 overall and
0-1 in the Big, Eight after a one-point
loss at Oklahoma State last Saturday.
“Going to Missouri we have
played seven straight road games,
and a team has to have experience
before it can go on the road and con
sistently expect to win,” said the
second-year head coach. “It is a mat
ter of getting a little more game time
for the kids, and then we will be in
good shape.”
Bliss’ lineup for the Missouri game
will feature either freshman Al Beal
or Drew Head at center, freshman
Clifford Johnson or Terry Stotts.
Freshman Aaron Curry may start at
guard.
Missouri has experience, even
though it is coming off a 77-72 loss at
Kansas last Saturday in a fight-
marred game that saw the team and
coach Norm Stewart pushed and
shoved by Kansas fans after the de
feat.
Missouri, expected to defend its
league title successfully, features
seniors Jim Kennedy and Kim An
derson, junior college transfer Clay
Johnson in the frontcourt and senior
Scott Sims and freshman Larry
Drew at guards. The first two players
off the bench are sophomore center
Stan Ray, a starter on last year’s
championship team, and 6-7 senior
James Clabon, who can play any pos
ition.
Kansas coach Ted Owens hopes
his team can continue to win the
close ones — something the
Jayhawks were unable to do a year
ago when they were 13-13 overall
and 6-8 in the league and lost six
league games total of 15 points.
Iowa State heads to Kansas State
already assured of bettering last
year’s record. The Cyclones, under
first-year coach Lynn Nance, have
won four games — one more than
they did all last year — and have
already equalled last year’s confer
ence win total with one victory.
