Defending champion Howard
Payne garnered third place in the
balloting.
In the dark, smoke-filled back
rooms where politicians and bowl
committee members conspire to
make the sun rise, the foundation for
what will determine the nation’s No.
1 college football team is being
made.
Now that Michigan has been
knocked out of the top spot by
mighty Purdue, Tony Dorsett (alias
Pittsburgh) leads everyone else in
both wire polls. It seems strange to
have a Pitt at the top rather than at
the subterranean level the word
connotes. Egads, the name sounds
like something from the center of a
fruit.
Well, if the pollsters can have Pitt,
then the bowl committees must have
the pendulum. For it is they who
decide whether many teams New
Years resolutions come true or not.
Those who make the selections for
post season bowl games have a his
tory of being a hit hasty in their
choices. Although Nov. 20 is the des
ignated date to hand out bowl bids,
under the table offers have been
known to occur ahead of time.
Many bowls, such as the Cotton,
Sugar, Rose and Fiesta, have con
tracts to bill the champion of a re
spective conference. Others such as
the Bluebonnet and the Liberty
Bowls, have no such entanglements.
Making the fight cards for these
games and providing opposition for

The main incentive of count,
