Colts ready
for Cowboys
Polo teams off to fast start
Associated Press
DALLAS — The spiritually
healed Baltimore Colts put their
11-game regular season victory
streak on the line against the Dallas
Cowboys Sunday in a battle of Na
tional Football League unbeatens.
The Colts, buffeted by a feud be
tween the front office and Coach Ted
Marchibroda, have swept aside New
England and Cincinnati with bril
liant performances from quarterback
Bert Jones.
“I think the situation helped give
them their enthusiasm back,” said
Dallas Coach Tom Landry.
Marchibroda “resigned” after
verbal conflict with club president
Robert Irsay and vice president Joe
Thomas. Then Marchibroda came
back after strong player support.
“Ted felt front office interference
in his running the football team on
the field,” said public relations di
rector Barry Jones. “No one is speak
ing about the situation any longer.
Hopefully, the turmoil is over. It did
provide a rallying point for the club
like Coach Landry said.”
Landry has paid his usual proper
respect to an upcoming opponent.
saying, “Baltimore is very aggres
sive. They play with a lot of en
thusiasm. It will take a great effort to
beat them . . . They really play foot
ball and hustle.”
Landry said Jones is “one of the
brightest young quarterbacks I’ve
seen. He has a great arm and great
poise. I met him once and he is an
outstanding young man.”
Jones was perhaps the most out
spoken of the Colt players who stood
behind Marchibroda.
“Bert was at the point where he
felt he was in a financial situation
where he did not have to depend on
football for a living,” Barry Jones
said. “He said he would play out the
year then asked to be traded if Mar
chibroda wasn’t the coach.”
The Cowboys have been devastat
ing in victories over Philadelphia
and New Orleans.
“Baltimore should help us
evaluate just what kind of a team we
have,” Landry said.
“Potentially, it could be the best
team we’ve had. But to be honest
with you I don’t know how far along
Freshmen were the guiding force
last night, as the men’s water polo
team defeated SMU 9-8.
Steve Spicer scored four of the
Aggie goals, while goalie Vincente
Tazarez blocked two penalty shots in
the final period in leading the Aggies
to victory. Scott Harris added two
points to the effort, with Blake Hin-
man, Jim Yates and Steve Moore
rounding out the Aggie scoring.
“Tazarez played an excellent de
fensive game,” coach Dennis Fos-
dick said. Bob Leland did an out
standing job on setting up plays.
“Our main problem was jamming
in the middle, and not playing team
ball. Our reactions were slow, but
all these things can be expected in a
first game.”
The team will be traveling to
California next week to play in a
major tournament.
The women’s water polo team
went into double overtime, to de
feat Clear Creek 6-5 last Tuesday
night.
The first team played most of the
grueling night, with Barbara Ger
man, Debbie Star and Ann Ketterer
each scoring two goals.
Defense was the Aggie main
method of victory, with Shirley Hill
saving the game by blocking two
penalty shots in the overtime
period.
The girls will play a scrimmage
against the freshmen guys next
Wednesday before traveling to San
Antonio to play their womens’ team.
