create visions of a white hospital with
padded rooms and straight jackets,

i Brazos Valley Mental Health-
1 ‘Mental Retardation Center. The
1( center is located at 202 E. 27th in
c ] Bryan. It serves a seven county area
e . c with a drug abuse program, an al-
v .cohol abuse program, training pro
grams, mental retardation and
psychological evaluation, and coun-
seling on an inpatient or outpatient
CT-basis.
L>( •„
hi The counties served are Brazos,
an Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison,
ne Robertson and Washington. People
bo' of any age are eligible for the serv-
lig ices.
ho For developmentally disabled
en children from birth to age three
hii there is the First Steps Forward pro
se' gram, located in the center. The
th program provides evaluation of the
El child’s hearing, mental, sight and
cn speech abilities .
in Parents of these children are eli
gible for therapeutic and educational
counseling services. Payment for
this and other programs is based on
the families’ various incomes. No
one is excluded because of income.
The center owns Dilly Shaw farm,
a nine acre tract located near Bryan.
It provides a hortitherapy program
that features an orchard and a
greenhouse. The greenhouse was
built by agricultural engineering
students at Texas A&M. House-
plants grown there are sold locally,
with the help of Dr. Roberta Smith
of Texas A&M. A truck farm is
planned for the future.
A special education services pro
gram teaches job skills to mentally
handicapped persons between the
ages of 12 and 21. With these skills
they are placed in jobs in the com
munity. Charlene Stewart, director
of mental retardation programs, said
participants are working as janitors
and employes in the food services
department on the A&M campus.
A sheltered work activities pro
gram is available at Dilly Shaw for
persons over age sixteen who have a
more severe mental handicap. The
program allows the patients to earn
money and be productive.
The drug abuse program, Out
reach Crossroads Center, is located
in the mental health center. Per-
tients of the program. Group coun
seling sessions are used by the al
cohol abuse program to help their
patients.
Mental retardation services are of
fered to all ages and degrees of re
tarded persons at the request of an
individual or his family, schools and
probation offices. These services in
clude health screening, home man
agement, individual and group
counseling and medical referral.
Psychological evaluation, social as
sessment and social aid referral serv
ices are also offered. Community
education is available to any group
interested.
Medical needs of the center pa
tients are being handled through
local physicians and clinics.
The Family Tree, a residential
program, has a 23-bed facility at 408
N. Washington in Bryan. It provides
inpatient and outpatient services for
the retarded. Like Dilly Shaw farm,
housekeeping duties and money
management enable the patient to
live on his own.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The
Food and Drug Administration, ex

getting enough information about
their children’s food, said Tuesday it
is proposing new ingredient labeling
requirements for baby foods.
The proposals would require baby
food manufacturers to label the per

both infant foods and junior foods

major ingredient.
For example, a label on a jar of
carrots and peas might say, “Carrots
