Youths to study firearms safety Singing Cadet auditions

A new class, a new professor and a new number greeted
many Aggies yesterday when they began the fall ’76
semester. Dr. J. A. Dabbs, professor of modern lan
guages, has just assigned a number to a student in his
Spanish 205 class. Dabbs assisted those students who did
not understand the Spanish numerals by pointing to the
seat specified.

Area boys and girls will begin their
training in firearms and hunter
safety at 8:00 on Saturday, Sept. 4,
according to Sidney L. Loveless, Na
tional Rifle Association Counselor.
The school will continue through the
next two months at Pleasant Acres
for those between 11 and 19 years.
This school marks the beginning of
the 52nd such school conducted by
the Twin City Junior Rifle Club
under the auspices of the National
Rifle Association and YOU-
TOMORROW, a non-profit educa
tional corporation for the benefit of
youth. Although emphasis will be
placed on marksmanship and safety,
the students will have an opportu
nity to fire a shotgun at miniature
clay pigeons thrown by foot-
operated traps. Students will also re
ceive .22 rifle marksmanship train
ing.
For the hunter, there will be in
struction in tenting, cooking and
orienteering.

assistant dean
Dr. Donald A. Sweeney has been
named assistant dean for research
and continuing education for the
College of Architecture and En
vironmental Design at Texas A&M
University.
Dean Raymond Reed said that
Sweeney’s appointment becomes ef
fective Sept. 1.
Sweeney received all his degrees
at Texas A&M and has been on the
faculty since 1972. He has been in
volved in research on: Master Plan-
nin g for T errell State Hospital;
Rural Health Delivery System:
Texas 7-C Medicare Hospitals;
Health Planning Guidelines: De
veloping Countries; and Health
Consumer Awareness.
Sweeney’s teaching experience
includes: design methods, history
and theory of systems development,
industrialized building systems, de
sign, health facility design, health
planning and English. He also
worked with the Health and Hospi
tal Planning Council of Southern
New York, Inc.

for selection to membership in the
Twin City Junior Rifle Club, Love
less said. Firearms, ranges, texts,
ammunition and instruction will be
furnished. Students should wear
long-sleeved garments and bring
canteens.
Loveless, NRA Counselor, will be
chief instructor for the school. He
will be assisted by Jerry Mosley, Bob
Dansby and Marc Bonifazi.
Auditions began Monday for the
Singing Cadets, known nationally as
the voice of Texas A&M.
Director Robert L. Boone will
take on 20 to 25 new men, mainly
basses and second tenors. Students
desiring to audition will sign up in
the vocal music office in the Memo
rial Student Center.
The Singing Cadets plan a January
tour to the Texas Panhandle, along
with other performances.
