The seminar is being held this 'ear in conjunction with a Texas A&M centennial academic assembly and share the theme “Texas Higher Education: Mandate for Leader ship.” Some of the state’s top leaders in higher education, including Com missioner of Higher Education Dr. Kenneth Ashworth, will speak at the assembly. Other schools that have sent pro spective administrators are Texas Wesleyan, Baylor University, Texas Eastern University, Pan American University, Texas State Technical Institute, Angelo State University, North Texas State and Grayson County College. The centennial assembly, open to all interested persons, be* iegan Monday morning in Memorial Stu dent Center 206 with an address by Dr. Ralph Steen, Stephen F. Austin State University president. Steen put Texas higher education in his torical context. Following was Ashworth’s ad dress on university administration and the quality of the process. Dr. John D. Millett of the Washington-based Academy for Educational Development and Dr. George B. Weathersby of the Har vard Graduate School of Education spoke Monday afternoon. Millett reviewed the decision making process and Weathersby fis cal accountability. Tuesday’s program began with Dr. Paul Dressel of Michigan State University delving into evaluation. In the afternoon, Dr. Michelle Myers and Dr. Gail Myers of Trin ity University discussed communi cations in education management. The final day of the assembly fea tured talks on labor relations by Leonard Marcus of Yale University, affirmative action and equal em ployment by Beverly Ledbetter of the University of Oklahoma, and academic freedom by Dr. Manuel Davenport, head of Texas A&M’s Philosophy and Humanities De partment. The assembly and seminar are sponsored by the College of Educa tion in cooperation with the Univer sity’s Continuing Education Office. Fire protection leaders attend conference A national conference to define a fire officials executive development course began yesterday at Texas A&M University. The three-day conference is at tended by fire protection leaders and local, state and federal govern ment officials from throughout the U. S. It is being conducted by the Of fice of Executive Development Pro grams in Texas A&M’s College of Business Administration. EDP for three years has conducted fire offi cials executive development courses for Texas fire officials through the Fire Protection Training Division of theTexas Engineering Extension Service. A grant was provided by the Na tional Fire Protection and Control Administration of the U. S. De partment of Commerce to assemble the conference. Weirus is executive director of the Association of Former Students. He will be part of a nine-member faculty for the five-day summer in stitute conducted by the Council for Advancement and Support of Edu cation (CASE). The institute with a basic pro gram for new professionals and an advanced program for the experi enced is planned at MSU’s Kellogg Center for Continuing Education at East Lansing. Weirus will conduct sessions on basic programs for newcomers, campus programs such as the senior induction banquet, deans’ dinner and student loan funds, large-office organization and alumni chapters or A&M clubs as known here. He will co-chair a debate on alumni dues and share responsibility on another debate on alumni merchandising services. Others on the summer institute faculty are from Iowa State, Pomona and Stephens Colleges, MSU, Carnegie-Mellon, Miami of Ohio, CASE and Queens College of the City University of New York. Allan Arlett, who directs Queens’ alumni relations and development, and Weirus join forces for the joint sessions. A 1942 Texas A&M graduate, Weirus has been the Association executive 12 years.
