Top women athletes
sign with Ai?M
Clash in NCAA Regional first round
Aggies, 38-11, to meet Missouri, 45-21
Texas A&M has announced the
signing of seven outstanding women
athletes — one in basketball, two in
track, one in golf and three in swim
ming.
The basketball player is Von Bunn
from Victoria. Bunn earned all-state
honors in Class A AAA. She averaged
23.5 points per game in leading her
team to a 33-2 record and runnerup
in the state tournament. She was
named to the South All-Star team.
The tracksters are Jan Chesbro
from Humble and Julie White from
Arlington. Chesbro finished second
in the Class AAA high jump and is
also a sprinter. White was the state
champion in the Class AAAA 880 and
finished eighth in the state cross
country meet.
The swimmers are Jennifer Hicks
from Chula Vista, Calif., Shirley Hill
from San Diego, Calif., and Julie
Krienke from San Jose, Calif.
The golfer is Carol Berry from
Houston Westbury.
Texas A&M meets Missouri at 5
p.m. Friday in Edinburg, Tex., in
the first round of the NCAA Mid
west Regional baseball tournament.
The Aggies, 38-11, earned a berth
in the tourney by finishing second in
the Southwest Conference and post
ing a school record number of
victories. The Aggies ranked 13th in
the nation in fielding and also ranked
high in batting witb an average of
.310 and pitching with an ERA of
2.95.
Missouri, 45-20, beat out Okla
homa for the Big Eight title. The
Tigers hit . 327 for the season with a
4.18 team earned run average.
Aggie coach Tom Chandler will
likely go with senior righthander
Clint Thomas (11-3) in the tourney
opener. James Gibson (15-2) will
pitch the second game with David
Lockett (8-2) going in the third
game.
Missouri will go with lefthander
Rob Pietroburgo (7-4).
Pan American will play either
Arizona or South Alabama at 8 p.m.
in the nightcap of the opening twin-
bill. The two losers will play at 1
p.m. Saturday with the winners
meeting at 8 p.m. Saturday. The los
ers from Saturday will play at 5 p.m.
Sunday with the winner of that game
playing the winner of the second
Saturday game at 8 p.m. Sunday. If
another game is needed in the dou
ble elimination tourney it will be
played Monday.
If Missouri goes with the lefthan
der, A&M’s batting order will prob
ably have Robert Verde, cf; Robert
Bonner, ss; Bill Raymer, rf; Buster
Turner, dh; John Biersner, c;
Winston Whiddon, 3b; Shelton
McMath, If; Bob Dulak, lb; Buddy
Grobe, 2b. Against a righthand
pitcher, Mark Thurmond will be in
centerfield with Verde moving to left
and Randy Blanchard will be the des
ignated hitter.
Missouri’s lineup will probably be
Jim Leavitt, If-dh (.383); John Kruse,
2b (.359); Greg Cypret, ss (.356); Al
Hightower, cf (.354); Curt Brown,
Ib-dh (.345); Frank Shellenback, if
(.341); Mark Thiel, c (.308); Mike
Lally, 3b (.282); Jeff' Haferkamp, if
(.263).
Raymer is A&M’s leading hitter
with a .361 average. He also Id
