The Southwestern Life Insurance Co., of Dallas, in a letter to Ray Smith, director of personnel at A&M, said that it will be necessary to increase premiums for the System Group Medical Insurance approxi mately 48 per cent. Premiums for the life insurance and long-term disability plans prob ably would remain the same. Under the proposed rates, the premium for an employe, with the best medical insurance offered under the System plan, will increase from $14.65 to $21.68 per month. Premiums for the same coverage for an employe and one dependent will increase from $32.50 to $48.10 and, for an employe with two or more dependents, the increase will be from $44.65 to $66.08 monthly. Southwestern Life said higher claims than expected and inflation in costs of medical treatment are the reasons for the increase. Ford reinstates tech office Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Ford on Tuesday signed a bill re establishing the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, dismantled three years ago by Presi dent Nixon. Saying that “a strong federal effort in science, engineering and technol ogy is critical to our future,” Ford signed the legislation in an East Garden ceremony attended by sev eral leading American scientists and engineers. “This new office will provide an important source of advice on the scientific, engineering and technical aspects of issues that require atten tion at the highest levels of govern ment,” he said. The office will have a budget of $3 million for fiscal 1977. The bill also includes $750,000 to support the of fice between now and the end of the current fiscal year in June and $500,000 for the transitional quarter, UMMER VALUES !l HOP AND SAVE ...STOREWIDE VALUES DRUGS & FOODS STORE HOURS MONDAY-SATURDAY 8 A.M. -12 P.M. The President is expected soon to name a director for the office who also will serve as Ford’s science ad viser. There will be four associate directors and a staff of about 15. The office will advise the Presi dent on all aspects of science and technology, including energy, ag riculture, medicine, the economy, the environment and use of re sources. It also will advise the Na tional Security Council on military research. Ford’s decision to recreate the of fice by statute rather than by execu tive order as previous presidents have done, shows his intent to make it a permanent part of the White House establishment. President Roosevelt set up the first such office during World War II. Its role lapsed after the war, but it was revived by President ! Eisenhower in 1957 after the Rus sians launched Sputnik I, the first earth satellite. Nixon abolished the office in 1973 and transferred many of its functions . to the National Science Foundation. He said the action was taken to save money. Texas drivers may donate body parts Persons applying for a Texas ; Driver’s License now have the op tion of donating parts of their bodies to a hospital if they are killed in an accident. The state legislature passed a law that took effect in January, 1976, and provides the basis for the donation system. When a person receives his new driver’s license, he may sign a state- , ment on the back of the license in which he specifies which parts of his ; body will be made available upon his ; death. The signature must also he witnessed by two others. If the donated part can be re moved within a reasonable time after death, the operation will be per formed at the nearest hospital. A hinderance with this program lies in a state law which requires that a body remain at the scene of death until a justice of the peace has made an investigation. This can delay re moval of the body parts until they are no longer useable. The Department of Public Safety does not keep records of how many body parts have been donated, so it is not known how many persons are using the donation system. Persons not wishing to donate body parts should leave the back part of their driver’s licenses unsigned. — Steve Ingram 'YfihrfcH.ousi 3715 East 2?' b 5T.
