He said, “We will either be playing in the Mid-West or Rocky Mountain regionals. I have sent assistant coach Jim Sampson to scout the Big Eight final between Oklahoma and Missouri, should we go to the Mid-West tourney. If we receive a berth in the Rocky Mountain tournament, I know we will be playing Arizona State, the number one team in the nation.” News of the Aggies receiving a tournament bid was sent to Athletic Director, Emory Bellard. It marks the second straight year the Aggies have been selected to play in the tournament. The Aggies have scheduled 12 practice games over the next two weeks. The teams they will be play ing are St. Mary’s, Lamar University and Pan America. These teams should give the Ags some stiff com petition before the play-offs begin. Chandler has not chosen his start ing pitcher. He said that it depended upon what team they would be play ing, and what kind of line-up that team had. James “Hoot” Gibson has the best record of the Aggie hurlers, compiling a 13-1 seasonal mark. A&M had its best season this year, compiling a 34-8 record. They are ranked 20th in the nation, finishing second in SWC action to the Univer sity of Texas. The Ags had an excellent hitting team this season, and should prove a formidable opponent. Their team batting average was .313. Billy Raymer was the team’s leading hitter with a .381 average. Besides these marks, school marks were broken in the following categories: Most vietories-34, SWC fielding average-.967, Season base on ball-37, Bill Raymer; Career baseball on ball-99, Bill Raymer; Career pitching victories-24, Clint Metcalf, Thomas Prospects ink national letters sign recruits Illinois guard added to roster Thomas; Season pitching victories- 14, James Gibson; Career innings pitched-257, Clint Thomas; Career strikeouts-229, Clint Thomas; Career complete games-17, James Gibson; Season strikeouts-91, Clint Thomas; SWC career ERA-1.68, James Gibson; SWC season ERA- 1.20, James Gibson; SWC season complete games-7, James Gibson; SWC career complete games-13, James Gibson. The bright spot for the Aggies is the signing of Houston Sterlings’ three premier runners. They are twins Kent and Karl Figgs, and Re- ■ ginaldjamerson. Meanwhile, Fitch went ahead with an afternoon workout in an at tempt to end the on-court woes that left the Cavaliers on the wrong side ofa2-0margin in their National Bas ketball Association playoffs with Bos- tonfor the Eastern Conference title. The Mileti-Fitch clash that had | been something of an open secret for months became public during the weekend. The Cleveland Plain Dealer, quoting unidentified i sources, said Sunday Fitch’s depar ture from the dual post of coach and general manager was imminent un less a rift was resolved. •Then on Monday the paper quoted Mileti as having said on Saturday, “There is no rift on this side. I know of no rift. ” But that was before the Cavaliers lost game No. 2 to the Celtics. The Sunday score was 94-89, closer than the Cavaliers’ Thursday night loss of 111-99. And on the way home from Boston Sunday, Mileti repeated the charges, the Cleveland Press re ported Monday. Despite having gained a three-year contract at $75,000 per year last summer, Fitch had asked April 30 to be released so he could become coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, Mileti said. Fitch, saying Monday the only thing he wanted to discuss was “win ning games,” added that he categori cally denied ever having asked to leave to coach the Lakers or any other NBA team. sprinter Sam Castro of Spring Branch. All three are superb athletes and should help shore-up head coach Clint Thomas’ team. These are the first signees of the season for the Aggies and mark the best crop of signees since the Mills Brothers. They are all rated on the blue-chip list, and place the Aggies in the lead for signees. The track team is now preparing for the Southwest Conference meet to be held in Austin in two weeks. The Aggies are considered to be strong in the field events, particu larly the shot and discus, the hurdles and the two-mile-relay team. What will hurt the tracksters is lack of depth and strength in the sprint races. Head coach Shelby Metcalf added one more man to his roster for next winter. His name is Dave Goff. Goff is a 5-10 guard from Homewood, Illinois. He shot 50 per cent from the field in high school, and averaged a nifty 17 points a game. More importantly is his ability to pass the ball and hit the open man. He averaged 7 assists per game last season. Goff played his high school bas ketball in the same area as such former Aggie greats like Mario Brown and Sonny Parker. He was selected to the Illinois All-Star game and was voted on to the All-Chicago area team by the Chicago Tribune. He reminds the coaches of a Mike Floyd or Gates Erwin, and will be heavily depended upon if John Sehlicher is unable to play. Other recruits for the Aggies this spring are John Sehlicher, Sonny Hammond, and Steve Sylvestine. The Aggies are lacking strong back up men at the forward and center. As of now the Ags tallest man is 6-8 center Wally Swanson. For the bas- ketballers to be strong contenders a strong forward and center must be recruited. 0" Tilings Hair Shaping Emporium For Men And Women 846-7614 331 University S/GH7SL"i& WHAT RIVER BOUNDS THE U.
