Bryan apartments involved
in testing energy-saving plan
By LEE ROY LESCHPER
Several members of the Texas
A&M economics dejiartment have
joined forces with a Bry an apartment
complex to test a new energy con-
serx ation idea for apartments.
Under the four-week program
tenants in the 200-unit Country
Place complex are asked voluntarily
to follow a checklist of energy con
servation practices. Two tenants
cooperating in the project will re
ceive cash prizes through a weekly
lottery.
Jimmy Walker, a graduate student
in economics, is conducting the
project for his Ph.D. dissertation
with the help of economics profes
sors Dr. John H kagel and Dr
Ray mond C. Battalio.
The economics department made
a study of energy use for individual
housing last summer. Walker said he
adapted that study to apartment
energy use problems for this project,
which began April 5.
M any local apartment complexes
have been considering rent in
creases for the coming year because
of the rising cost of gas and electric
ity. Country Place manager Pat Cox
said that complex’s electricity hill for
March was over $7,000. If the proj
ect is successful it could forestall ex
pected rent increases.
Three requirements are on the
checklist tenants are asked to follow:
Dkeep all windows closed when an
air conditioner or heater is in use. 2)
w hen using the air conditioner, keep
the temperature above 73 degrees.
3) when using the heater, keep the
temperature below 73 degrees.
Many tenants were dubious about
taking jwrt in the project at first, Cox
said.
“There were some misun
derstandings." Walker said. There
was some fear (by the tenants) of
being hasseled by the manage
ment."
Dr. Battalio said once the tenants
knew that A&M was handling the
project and not the apartment's
management, they were very
cooperative. He said 60-70 per cent
of the tenants are now in the pro
gram.
Each week Walker is randomly
checking apartments in the complex
until he finds 15 that are following
the three requirements on the
checklist. In a lottery among those
15, two weekly winners are selected.
Those winners receive from $15-25,
depending on how much electricity
the complex has saved.
The funds for the lottery are pro
vided by the complex's owner.
Walker said.
Manager Cox said the project will
not affect tenant rent. She said the
management is not interested in
checking up on tenants either.
