The Aggies are fresh off a shellack

score was 9-0.
In the singles the Aggies number
one seed, Charles Emley, was de
feated by S. M. U. s number one seed
David Bohrnstedt, 6-3, 6-0. The
closest match was between Chris
Delaney and the Aggies Mike Moss.
The score was 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.
The doubles did not treat the Ag
gies any better. Turpin/Vines of
S. M. U. defeated the Aggies number
one team of Emley/Courson, 6-3,
3-6, 6-2.
The Aggies will go into the
S.W.C. Tournament with a S.W.C.
record of 2-5.

Baylor wins track

The Baylor Bears totally domi
nated the Texas Association of Inter
collegiate Athletics for Women
(TAIA) Central Zone Meet here last
Saturday.
The Bears scored an overwhelm
ing 105 points, compared to A&M’s
42 and Sam Houston State’s 30.
The multi-talented Suzi Snider,
who is also the number one player on
Baylor’s women’s basketball team,
controlled a monopoly in the field
events, winning first in the shot put,
discus, and javelin throw.
Sharon Boyle was the workhorse
for the Aggies as she competed in
five field events, taking two firsts and
qualifying in four events for the state
meet.
Boyle won the two-mile and
three-mile runs with times of
12:47.49 and 20:39.65, respectively.
She won second place in the mile run
with a time of 5:57.54, while her
jump of 3-8 also won second in the
high jump.
Sandra Lyman captured second in
the shot put with a throw of 37-10
3/4, and third in the discus with
126-3.
Darcey Ehmann’s throw of 131-9
won second in the discus, while her
effort of 34-9 was good for third in the
shot put.
Debbie Timmons clocked 1:14.67
to win second in the 400-meter hur
dles, while Martha Sartain ran the
880-yard dash in 2:30.57 to take
third.
Kay Kingsberry finished third in
the mile run with a time of 6:35.16.
The team of Kingsberry, Lyman,
Ehmann, and Diane McCrady
finished the two-mile relay in
12:49.46 to take second.
The top three finishers in each
event, plus any other athlete who
made the state qualifying standard,
qualified for the state meet to be
held here at Kyle Field, April 30.

on Saturday.
The Aggie entries are Monte
Schauer, Steve Whiteside, Bobby
Baker, Doug Ward, Larry Gorzycki
and Rusty Day.
Schauer was the Aggies’ best
finisher in the AAII tournament, Be
ing for 19th place. His four-day total
of 298 was 18 strokes in back of win
ner Chip Beck of Georgia. Day was
only one stroke behind Schauer at
299.
Other Aggie finishers were Bobby
Baker at 301, Larry Gorzycki at 304
and Steve Whiteside at 309.
Oklahoma State, shooting even
par as a team, won the team totals at
1,152. A&M’s four-day total was
1,202.

The staff and close affiliates of the

The voice of Aggie basketball,
Mike Mistovich, attended the affair
and did not approach the mi
crophone except to receive the pic
ture which Metcalf presented to the
sports announcer.
The evening went smoothly ex
cept for the loud music which came
from a rock band playing in the adja
cent ballroom. When Emory Bellard
approached the podium and began
to speak, he said that he did not
know whether he should talk or
dance.
Dr. Shelby Metcalf told how
tough it is to be a champ. He told the
crowd that if a person is to be in
command out in the world, he must
also be in command at home.
“And I want you to know that I
have breakfast in bed every morn
ing,” Metcalf said.
“Of course I have to cook it my
self. . .but...”
