Country-western, pop and classi
cal music will be nowhere in sound of
G. Rollie White Coliseum this
Saturday night. Instead, some good
of San Francisco rock will be causing
the hands to clap and the ears to ring.
Music Review
The group’s name is Journey and it
is composed of former members
from Santana, The Mothers, David
Bowie and The Steve Miller Band.
Organized two years ago. Journey
has quickly established itself as one
of the bright new bands of San Fran
cisco, according to Jay Arnold of
“The Hollywood Reporter”.
Instead of heavy metal, where the
sound of every instrument hits you at
once. Journey’s sound can best be
described as heavy space— a type of
Nine paintings stolen Tuesday
Associated Press
SAN ANTONIO — A young man
posing as a flower delivery boy en
tered the home of millionaire W. L.
Moody III, held him and two other
persons at gunpoint and stole nine
original paintings including works by
Goya, Gainsborough and Van Eyck.
Police said the young man took the
paintings Tuesday morning and fled
after pushing Moody, 62, and his
companions into a bathroom and two
closets and nailing them shut.
Alfrieda Rief, 52, a maid, told
police she answered the back door
bell to find a young man with short
brown hair bolding two pots of
wilted flowers.
The man said the flowers were for
Mrs. Moody.
He then pulled a gun and pushed
past Mrs. Rief, locked her in a
nearby bathroom and nailed the
door shut.
The robbery was discovered
shortly after noon when Mrs.
Katherine Moody, 50, returned to
find her husband and maid in their
respective closets.
music that bathes the senses, where
each instrument is articulate and
stands out individually. Shedding
the Latin-sound influence from the
ex-Santana members, in favor of
rock, the group updates the
psychedelic openness of the late Six
ties Beatles, Grateful Dead and Jef
ferson Airplane with their own brand
of space rock.
Tbe members of Journey include
organist/singer Gregg Rolie and 21-
year-old wbiz kid guitarist Neal
Schon, both from Santana. Bassist
Ross Valory played in several smaller
Bay Area groups before joining The
Steve Miller Band in 1971. Aynsley
Dunbar is the only non-Californian
in the band; the English drummer
started with John Mayall, formed
Retaliation and then played with the
“200 Motels” version of The Mothers
and later with David Bowie.
The Bay’s best band is currently
on tour and will be performing in
Houston with The Marshall Tucker
Band and The Doobie Brothers
Sunday, April 25. They have re
cently been on the road with Electric
Light Orchestra promoting their re
cent album Look Into The Future.
Music critics from “The Rolling
Stone”, “Iconoclast” and “The Hol
lywood Reporter” agree if Journey
can avoid the big-name ego hassles,
all the glitter gimmicks and satin
camouflage that have ruined rock
and keep themselves together as a
group, they could become one of the
best rock bands around.
Journey’s intelligent, no-
nonsense rock sound currently em
phasizes Schon’s guitar as the motive
force. His guitar style is particularly
expressive and because Rolie is the
only singer in the band, Schon con
siders the guitar his voice.
Using a smooth blend of their di
verse Santana and English blues.
Journey has produced such songs as
“Mystery Mountain”, from their first
album Journey, “In My Lonely
Feeling” and the title cut from their
latest album Looking Into The Fu
ture.
Appearing with Journey and open
ing the concert is Baby, a rock band
from Amarillo.
The concert is a Town Hall attrac
tion and is part of the Residents Hall
Authority (RHA) weekend.
It begins at 8 p.m.
