Guinness Exhibit Hall to open m May
A permanent official Guinness
World Records Exhibit Hall is
scheduled to open in May in the
Empire State Building.
Visitor participation will be an im
portant part of the 240 exhibits.
Guests will push buttons, activate
switches to light up displays, view
“the smallest” recordbreakers
through magnifying glasses and view
recordbreaking feats and events on
closed circuit color television sc
reens.
Most of the 5,000 square feet will
be devoted to the more popular
Guinness record categories of
human stunts and achievements and
sports and games. One display, for
example, will reveal by an X-ray the
stomach of the man who swallowed 4
swords at one time, and another will
show lightning as it shot through the
hat of the Park Ranger who was
struck 5 times and lived to tell the
tale. Visitors will also hear the
world’s greatest car salesman go into
his spiel, will be able to compare the
largest locust swarm with the size of
Manhattan Island, will see Joe Louis
knock out more than 20 opponents,
see Babe Ruth, Bobby Jones and
Don Budge swing, see the greatest
domino tumble (15,000 one by one,
as if racing along a railroad track).
On view also will be the world’s
most expensive shoes — mink-lined
golf shoes with ruby-tipped gold
spikes that sell for $6,500 per pair
(orders will be taken in the museum
gift shop) — along with the world s
smallest playable violin next to the
world’s largest guitar. Of the per
sonified replicas, the most spectacu
lar will be a full-size figure of the
world’s tallest man, who at 8 feet
11.1 inches had to have a dome cut in
the ceiling to accommodate the top
of his head. Besides, visitors will find
the world’s longest moustache,
beard and fingernails, the biggest
hamburger, the longest apple peel,
the largest tire (which encircles a
Volkswagen), and a dozen eating
records portrayed visually. Here will
be the world’s smallest book and a
human hair split into 14 parts.
Photographs and montages will sup
plement the moving exhibits, featur
ing such personages as the least suc
cessful author in the world. Displays
will continually he changed as rec
ords are broken and recordbreakers
will be invited to make personal ap
pearances and autograph hooks.
New records will be posted daily.
