These kites, and more, hung in Zaehry Engineering
Center all belong to Pat Hammond, the “Kite Lady” of
San Antonio. Hammond, a native of Bryan, won the
1972 Smithsonian National Kite Flying Championship.
A graduate of the University of Texas, she is currently
lecturing on the A&M campus.

Prof
dies in
collision
Memorial services will be
held for an A&M professor at 3
p.m. Thursday in the All -
Faiths chapel.
Dr. Keith A. Sutherland, as
sistant professor of history, was
killed on March 19 in Pecos
when a tractor-trailer rig
swerved and collided head on
with his car.
He is being buried today in
his home town: Ellsworth,
Maine.
Sutherland received his B.A.
and M.A. degrees in education
from the University of Maine
and his Ph. D. from Cornell
University.
This was Sutherland’s second
year at A&M. Previously he had
taught at Tarleton State Univer
sity and several other univer
sities.
He was an authority on pre-
Civil War congressional poli
tics.
Former student to
start lecture series
Herman Gollob, vice president
and member of the board of directors
of Atheneum Press of New York and
1951 Texas A&M graduate, is begin
ning a series of public addresses,
classroom lectures, talks with uni
versity officials and student visits as
an A&M centennial professor.
His first address, “Texas Writers I
Have Known and Loved,” is at 8
p.m. Tuesday in room 226, Evans
Library. On April 2 in the same
room, Gollob will make a 4 p.m. ad
dress on the book-publishing process
entitled “Hit or Myth.”
He remains on campus through
April 3.
Aside from academic appearances,
Gollob will also have dinner with the
Aggie Players, in which he was active
during his undergraduate days, and
members of Aggie Cinema, the de
scendant organization of the A&M
Film Society, of which he was presi
dent.
He joined Atheneum as editor-
in-chief of trade books in October,
1971, and was made a vice-president
the same year. He was made a direc
tor in late 1975. Previously, he had
been director of Harper’s Magazine
Press which he founded in 1969.

tennial professor from Harvard Uni
versity and the University of Cam
bridge, England, will present a
series of lectures on quantitative his
torical analysis.
Fogel will speak every night
through Friday at 7:30 p.m. in room
100, Harrington Education Center.
Biologist, architect to speak
A biologist and an architect will
speak at Texas A&M University this
week as visiting centennial profes
sors.
Dr. Thomas Eisner, professor of
biology at Cornell University, will
give a series of public lectures under
the general heading of “To Be An
Insect. He is an outstanding author
ity on the behavior, ecology and
physiology of insects.
Prof. Eisner will speak today on
the topic, “To Depend on Plants”
and on “To See the Invisible” tomor
row. These will be presented at 8
p.m. in MSC 206.
Dr. James M. Fitch, professor of
architecture and historic preserva
tion at Columbia University, will
give a public lecture today at 4 p.m.
in the Architecture Building au
ditorium on “Architecture Worth
Saving.”
Fitch is a pioneer in environmen
tal design and a leading architectural
historian. One of the first preserva
tion programs in the U. S. was
started by him at Columbia.
