When the Academic Building was built in 1914 on the site of Old Main it dominated the campus’ main entr ance, which then faced the railroad tracks. Since that time the University en trance has shifted to the eastside, but the old domed structure still remains the symbol of academic life at Texas A&M. Its four floors have housed the of fices of the president, the registrar, commandant, the exchange store, the library, architecture depart ment, and now the departments of philosophy and modern languages and other offices. An open rotunda rises 6 floors from the center of the symmetrical building. It is capped off by a now gmng-colored dome. A few years back, art students fitted the dome with a 25-foot wide braissere. The campus police unstrapped the build ing in front of throngs of noon-hour students. Cadet buglers blow taps for de ceased Aggies from the balcony sur rounding the dome. A light which once topped the dome (called Pre- xy’s Moon) was used as an aircraft warning beacon. Prof. E. E. Giesecke, the struc tural engineer for the building, made the walls and floors several feet thick out of reinforced concrete. He claimed he wasn’t sure of the exact strength of the relatively new build ing material and was adding a,couple extra layers “just to be safe. Tt will be a tough structure to bring down. Trimmed in red granite, the $225,000 building was done in the neo-classical revival style of the times. It carries the traditional column-supported pediment pasted to the front of the edifice, and up lifted a floor above the ground. Even today its front lawn, one of the last open green spaces on cam pus, attracts students, staff, and vis itors to its quiet for some rest and relaxation between, or even during classes.
