eye concerning overpayment to
athletes involving the University of
Texas.
Records prove the Texas athletes
were overpaid and several of the
Longhorns returned the excess cash
to their former employers, the Texas
State Legislature.
“Do you know what those UT
jocks were getting paid to do? They
were honorary sergeants at arms,”
said Converse, seams splitting in
rage. “What the heck does an honor
ary sergeant at arms do to get over
paid? And where were the SWC
gumshoes when this came out?
Maybe it’s because Cliff Speegle let’s
Daddy D run the conference.”
Noses have also sniffed Arkansas’
way as a Dallas Morning News story
reported possible violations during
the recruiting of a high school quar
terback. Nothing surfaced publicly
concerning the investigation how
ever.
Court testimony revealed that it
was Texas basketball coach Leon
Black who sent a letter containing
the charges against Godine and Wil
liams to the conference. Black has
since replaced Godine and Williams
in the judgment seat and has ac
quired the tag of stool pigeon.
Aggies, sensitive to this assault
from without, and not being able to
strike back, shouted, “Beat the hell
out of Leon Black, at the TCU bas
ketball game. But what if Black’s
charges are true?
“Well, I guess the Aggies will have
to open their mouths and insert their
Converses,” said the rather worn
sneaker.
Godine and Williams now go to
Houston (for whatever advantage
home ground provides) to give their
side of the story, something which
should have been done before any
hint of suspension was made.
Do the two Aggies have a firm
sneaker, er, uh, leg to stand on?
“I don’t know and couldn’t tell if I
did,” said Converse as he quietly
loped out of the limeljghtand back to
theToeker room.

The A&M women swimmers leave
for the state meet in Lubbock today,
with Texas and SMU as chief con
tenders for the top spot.
The squad, which has won every
meet they have participated in this
season, is predicted to take second
by Coach Dennis Fosdick. He was
cautious in naming any first place
takers, but confidently said almost
everyone on the squad has a chance
to place.
Jeannie Buckles, Fosdicks’
California recruit, looks strong in the
three backstroke events and could
prove to be a major point gatherer
because of unlimited entry. Cur
rently, Buckles is one of two A&M
women swimmers who has qualified
for Nationals.
Debbie Starr swims sprints and is
the other National qualifier. Starr is a
walk-on from Houston who came up
through the age-group program. Her
specialty is the 50-yard freestyle and
her prospects are good to make a run
at first place in that event.

North Texas State, 8-1
The Texas Aggie tennis team de
feated North Texas State University
8-1 Tuesday at the University
Courts. The victory brings their sea
son record to 5-2.
This was the second time the Ag
gies have defeated North Texas this
season. The Ags beat North Texas in
the Lamar tournament 9-0.
In the singles matches A&M’s
Charles Emley defeated Mark
Walker 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1
match. Blake Avera of North Texas
beat Mike Moss in the No. 2 match
1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Tom Courson beat
Brad Rickison 6-4, 6-3 and Mark Sil-
berman beat Rick Frantz 6-1, 6-2.
The Aggies’ John Kirwan beat Jim
Wright 6-3, 6-3 and Robin Baker de
feated Jerry Garcia 6-3, 6-1.
In the doubles competition
Emley-Moss defeated Avera-Frantz
6-7, 6-0, 6-2. The second match saw
Courson-Kirwan beat Walker-
Rickison 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. In the final
match of the day, Silberman-Roger
Pier defeated Wright-Garcia 7-6,
6-2.
The Aggies leave Wednesday for
Corpus Christi to compete in a 16-
team tournament.
Some of the top teams in Texas will
be in the tournament. Along with
A&M will be Trinity, Texas Christ
ian University, Texas, Houston and
SMU.
The Aggies finished fifth in the
tournament last year.

BATTALION CLASSIFIED
Call 845-2611
Breaststroke is dominated by
Carol Hemphill, but Fawn Hollar
and Cindy Hallaran could combine
efforts and make a sweep of places in
the two events.
Middle and long distance swim
mers are Susan Johnston, Miriam
Quill and Leslie Hager. Johnston
and Hager ae old hands at the dis
tance events with freshman Quill
rounding out the trio. This again
could prove to provide a sweep in the
200 and 500 yard freestyles.
Beth McArthur, Kathy Singletary
and Barbara German look strong in
the butterfly events. These three
could be joined by Buckles.
This is going to be the first year
both trials and finals will be held at
the women’s meet. Fosdick thinks
this should prove to be an edge for
A&M because of long distances and
two-a-day workouts that are part of
the swimmers’ training.
The diving hopes were dimmed
when the single woman diver Jean
nie Neilson hurt her foot on the
board during Monday workout.
She had looked like a Nationals pos
sibility, Fosdick said.
The relays have been A&M’s
stronghold in the past, but Texas’
depth could prove to be the undoing
of this claim. Fosdick figures Texas
will beat A&M on depth and A&M
will beat SMU on the same criteria.
He admitted it was wrong to expect
the kind of depth Texas has from
walk-ons because A&M is not known
for its swimming program, especially
in the women’s program. He says the
word’s getting out now that there are
a number of women on scholarships.
Fosdick feels the women are ready
to swim their best, not looking at any
particular school for special com
petition.
The meet runs Thursday, Friday
and Saturday at the Texas Tech pool
in Lubbock.
