Page 6 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY. FEB. 18, 1976 Construction students apply class skills at Hensel Park r ^inf # Building construction students and members of the Physical Plant Department at Texas A&M joined forces to build new restroom facilities at Hensel Park. The requirement of a problems course was for the senior students to apply classroom skills to an actual project. Ron Haggin, head designer for the Physical Plant Department, knew of the class objectives and suggested the restroom project at the university-owned and -operated park to construction instructor Bob Segner. The 14-member class assumed the role of contractor and architect. The students developed and presented design, budget and material propo sals to University authorities. The University accepted the proposal and construction began in the fall. At this point the project was an integrated effort, with students pro viding most of the labor. Physical plant craftsmen provided plumbing, electrical, plastering and sitework expertise. Students alternated the role and responsibilities of jobsite superintendent. Segner and Jim Marsh, head of the building con struction department, provided technical guidance. The building was constructed at about one-half normal cost since the students were paid in academic credit. The course will be offered every year depending on the availability of projects according to Marsh. Some of the traditional aspects of anthropology include biology, geog raphy, agriculture, archeology, lin guistics, medical anthropology and cultural anthropology. Under the proposed program, specialized training in palynology, the study of pollen and spores; and ethnobotany, the study of plant lore will be included. Nautical archeol ogy will possibly also be included. The Academic Council meets to decide the change next Thursday. Currently, a master’s degree in anthropology is offered by Texas Tech, the University of Texas at Au stin, Southern Methodist University and the University of Houston. Most of these programs are very general in nature, Bryant said, and none will be comparable to the pro gram being proposed at A&M. Although the anthropology cur riculum at A&M is less than five years old, it is one of the fastest grow ing disciplines in the College of Lib eral Arts, he said. A&M now has the only ethnobo- tanical lab program in the state. Re searchers study human diets and the way man utilizes his environment. The palynology lab studies pollen in order to determine what the pre historic environment was like. -operated Hensel Park. The work was done as a class requirement. Big 1 Results! CLASSIFIED ilDS!
