had replaced an earlier mess hall that
burned down.
Until recent renovations, Sbisa
claimed the distinction of having the
largest, permanent, unobstructed
dining room in the world. The
largest of the three dining rooms
covered about a half acre.
“In the immense hall will be held
the three formal dances, the social
events of the year,” stated the 1913
Longhorn. “It is safe to predict that
for some time the dancers will have
ample floor space.”
With the advent of air-
conditioning, suspended ceilings re
placed the tall chambers and shoes
now walk on tile floors rather than
the original wooden ones. The
white-coated waiters and cries for
“bullneck” (meat) have changed to
fast food lines and ready-made
pizzas.
When Sbisa was constructed, the
Military Walk was also built to con
nect the mess hall with Guion Hall.
The latter was demolished four
years ago and replaced by Rudder
Center.
