Rice Owls defeat TCU, 93-78

HOUSTON —Elbert Darden and
Pete Meyers combined for 44 points
Tuesday night as Rice broke an 18-
game losing streak by defeating
Texas Christian, 93-78, in a South
west Conference basketball game.
Darden scored 24 points and
Meyers hit a career-high 20 as the
Owls broke open a tight game late in
the second half to post their first con
ference victory against 13 losses. The
Owls are 3-21 overall.
Meyers put the Owls ahead 60-59
with 11 minutes to go by converting
a technical foul by TCU’s Thomas
Bledsoe.
Rice then scored eight unan
swered points. The Frogs could not
get closer than eight points from
then on.
Bledsoe led the Horned Frogs
with 16 points as TCU fell to a 10-14
season mark and a 5-9 conference
record.

LUBBOCK, Tex. — Mike Russell
and Grant Dukes sparked a second-
half Texas Tech rally to carry the
Red Raiders past Baylor 87-76 here
Tuesday night.
The victory keeps Tech a half
game behind Texas A&M in the
race.
Baylor, which built a 37-33 half
time bulge, fell behind for the first
time, 45-43, on a short jumper by
Keitb Kitchens with 14:48 left.
From a 43-43 tie, the Raiders out-
scored the Bears 36-18 to grab a
79-61 lead with a little over three
minutes left to play.
The Raiders bad four players in
double figures, led by Russell with
24 and Rick Bullock with 21 points.
In addition to leading all scorers,
Russell had 18 rebounds and Bullock
15 as Tech held a wide 45-19 edge
in rebounding.
The victory raised Tech’s record to
11-3 in the conference and 18-5 on
the season while Baylor dropped to
7-7 in league play and 11-13 for the
season.
Dukes, who didn’t play in the first
half, came off the bench to hit six of
seven from the field and two free
throws for 14 points, the same total
posted by George Huston for Tech.
Larry Spicer had 13 and Sherman
Patton 10 for the Bears.

NORTH TEXAS 87
Jones combined for 47 points to lead
the Buffaloes to a 96-87 college bas
ketball victory over North Texas
State here Tuesday night.
Jones scored 22 points in the first
half to give West Texas a command
ing 60-45 lead.
“Sixty points in a half ought to win
for you anytime,” West Texas Coach
Ron Ekker said.
