100 years at A&M

Texas A&M’s Centennial has a
special meaning for the Lacey family
of Leon County. They have ties
spanning the 100 years of higher
education in Texas.
Robert A. Lacey, 1960 graduate,
serves today as A&M registrar. His
great-grandfather, Col. Robert
Lacey, the first Lacey to come to
Texas, helped establish Texas A&M
in 1876.
A framer of the Texas Constitu
tion, the Colonel strongly worked for
the college’s founding and served on
a committee with Gov. Sul Ross,
later A&M president, studying fur
therance of the school.
Apparently a man of vision, the
Colonel said shortly before his death
in December, 1901, that the A&M
College of Texas had just begun to
accomplish some of the work for
which it was established.
His descendant still helps A&M
strive toward those goals. As assis
tant registrar from 1965-69 and regis
trar since then, the current Lacey
has been in a unique position to wit
ness the dramatic growth.
When he attended from 1956-60,
enrollment was a roughly stable
8,000. Now there are almost that
many coeds and overall enrollment
has jumped 8,000 just in the past
three years. Each student has de
pended on the registrar’s office as the
first step to studies.
The first Lacey to attend A&M was
the registrar’s father, Charles Robert
Lacey of Centerville. The family has
generally remained in the Leon
County foothold established by the
Colonel in 1858.
Charles R. Lacey attended in 1922
and one of his brothers followed two
years later. In all, six Laceys have
had their names inscribed on dip
lomas from College Station.
Robert’s father, two uncles and his
aunt still reside in the Centerville
and Guy’s Store areas of Leon
County. Another uncle lives in Dal
las. Otherwise, the family continues
its cattle business established over
100 years ago.

SAN FRANCISCO — The gov
ernment plans to reconstruct the
bank robbery it says is symbolic ol
Patricia Hearst’s conversion to ter
rorism — the same holdup the de
fense portrays as her ultimate strug
gle for survival.
Jim Smith, manager of the Hiber
nia Bank, held up by the Symbionese
Liberation Army April 15, 1974, was
the trial’s first witness today. Miss
Hearst held a submachine gun dur
ing the robbery.
A jury of seven women and five
men was sworn in Wednesday and
heard chief prosecutor James L.
Browning Jr. describe the 21-year-
old newspaper heiress as a willing
and profane bandit.
Her chief defense counsel, F. Lee
Bailey, in his opening statement,
called the pale defendant “a prize
pig’ tortured by a convict self-taught
in the rudiments of mind control and
determined to have Hearst branded
an outlaw.

abduction until the bank robbery
two months later, Bailey said Miss
Hearst was taunted daily by the
SLA, told her family had abandoned
her, that the authorities wanted her
dead and that she had nowhere to go.
She was mentally and sexually tor
tured, he said, and was ordered to
participate forcefully in the bank
holdup or the SLA would “blow her
to bits’ if she “messed up.’
She became convinced that coop
eration with her captors was her only
means of survival he said. So, she
rushed into the bank with the others,
was introduced as a revolutionary
called Tania and helped the SLA
speed off with $10,690.
Miss Hearst was a prisoner of war
for 20 months until her capture in
San Francisco last Sept. 18, Bailey
said.

control books while in prison and
used the techniques on Miss Hearst.
Browning, in his opening argu
ment, said he woidd offer testimony
that Miss Hearst wielded her sub
machine gun with apparent sincerity
and uttered obscenities as she or
dered customers to the floor.
The jury also will hear tape rec
ordings of Miss Hearst before and
after the holdup in which she said
she had joined the SLA, taken the
name ofTania and freely participated
in the crime.
Earlier Wednesday, the defense
fought to have the tapes banned from
the trial, but U.S. District Court
Judge Oliver J. Carter denied the
motion.
Browning also said he would in
troduce a document, recovered the
day Miss Hearst was arrested, in
which the defendant allegedly brag
ged about her role as Tania and will
ing participant in the bank robbery.
With some portions in her own
handwriting, Browning said. Miss
Hearst wrote that the robbery was
staged “because we needed the
money and we wanted to illustrate
that Tania was alive and her decision
was not a hunch of B.S.”
Miss Hearst, sitting opposite the
jury on the second anniversary ofher
kidnaping, kept her head bowed dur
ing most of the opening statements.
She whispered to Bailey several
times while Browning was talking.
