Page 6 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, JAN. 29, 1976 Aggies recover SWC lead defeating Longhorns 72-60 By TONY GALLUCCI Battalion Staff Writer In the Aggies’ best 10 minutes of basketball this year, they proved once again there is no choke, and easily beat the Austin Teasips 72-60. Bany Davis said after the game, “You tell those Austin writers, the Aggies didn’t choke.” Trainer David Heath put it in still another perspective, “Texas is the only team in the Southwest Confer ence with a top button on their uni form, as in choke.” But it was just pure, good, physi cal Aggie basketball that won this battle of muscle before a highly par tisan crowd of 7,000, by far the Lon ghorns largest crowd of the year. The Aggies started slightly on the colder side of shooting percentages. They found their old touch 10 min utes into the game, building up an 11-point lead. The Ags hit a cold stretch that lost the lead and kept them scoreless the last 3-Vfe minutes of the first half. Scoring was well balanced the first half, with neither team having a player in double figures. Texas took a 39-37 lead to the locker room after scoring 10 straight points, reminiscent of the Aggies’ Monday night game against the Rice Owls. At the half some slight adjust ments were made. One, to keep Ovie Dotson from running off downcourt, was to put Sonny Parker guarding him and letting Davis worry about scraping the boards. In the words of assistant coach, Norman Reuther, “We came out determined to play defense, and I think we did an excellent job of it. Last year we made Dan Krueger look like an All- America, and tonight we shut him down. Krueger was high scorer for Texas with 11 points, but seven of those points came on free throws. Krueger also was responsible for eight fouls called on Aggies guarding him. The Aggies had only 20 fouls in the game. Karl Godine, called for two fouls while pursuing Krueger, said, “He was trying to get his arm around in front. He had the ball, and the ref isn t going to call him for it, he’s gonna call you. With a short spurt of outside shooting, the Aggies drew the Horns out of their tough zone defense and got them arunnin’. In that final stretch, beginning when the Horns held their last lead (54-53), the Ags outscored Texas 17-6. That was through the last 11 minutes. During six minutes of that time, the Horns went without scoring, and the points they did score were all from the char ity stripe. All-America candidate Sonny P and Barry Davis were outstanding in the assist-layup combination, dizzy ing the Texas defense in the final minutes with an impressive array of point-getters. Davis muscled in 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, nearly equaling his bruising performance against Arkansas on Saturday when Davis and Sonny P also provided the impetus in the closing minutes. The Aggies once again lead the conference standings, courtesy of the same Porkers from Fayetteville that knocked them out of it on Satur day. The Aggies are now 6-1 and 13-4 for the year. Texas Tech dropped a double-overtime game to Arkansas 92-86, and dropped to 6-2 in SWC play. Tech led most of the game until the final seconds, when they were called for a technical foul, enabling the Razorbacks to tie up the game and go on to win. SMU stayed in third place, beating Rice.
