Take East University to 29th St. (Tarrow Street)
By CAROLYN BLOSSER
Battalion Sports Writer
Coming back from a nine point
deficit early in the game, the Aggies
took charge and defeated Sam
Houston State University last night
62-44. The Ags’ record now stands
at 4-1 for the season.
The Sam Houston Bearkats were
the fast starters, taking a quick 8-0
lead. With goals from Cissy Auclair,
Sally Morisse, and Cindy Gough,
A&M tied it at 10-10 and Sam Hous
ton promptly called timeout.
The Bearkats then increased their
lead to 21-12 but that was as far as
they ever got. A&M caught fire and
behind the shooting of Gough and
Morisse, took over the lead with five
minutes remaining in the first half.
They never again trailed.

DALLAS — Dallas Cowboy
Coach Tom Landry, a down-to-
earth realist, said Tuesday he
doesn’t see how his young defense
can stop Washington’s high-scoring
offense Saturday in a showdown for
a National Football League wild
card ’ playoff berth.
“I just don’t see how you can keep
’em from scoring, said Landry. I
hope we can attack their defense the
way other teams have this year.
Landry said his team was still
somewhat shell-shocked after Sun
day’s 31-17 loss to St. Louis, the
leaders in the National Conference
Eastern Division.
“I think you coidd say the team
isn’t in a very good humor . • • That
may be good . . . You just don t get
over a bad whipping overnight,
said Landry.
Landry said he wasn t certain
what effect the St. Louis beating
would have on the Cowboys for
Saturday’s nationally televised game
in Texas Stadium.

“I don’t know the psychology of
the game and I’ve been in it a long
time, ’ said Landry. “If we have a
chance against Washington, it will
have to be in a high scoring game.
Washington has a great offense.”
He said Washington had the edge
in maturity and consistency.
“They have given up more points
than normal but they are still a very
consistent football team,” said
Landry.
The Cowboys and Redskins are
tied at 8-4 with two games to go. St.
Louis is 9-3.
A Cowboy victory would assure
Dallas the wild card berth even if
they lose their last game with the
New York Jets. The same holds true
for Washington which hosts
Philadelphia in the last game of the
year.
Both teams are still alive in the
championship race but St. Louis
uld have to lose twice.
One of our best games of the
year was against Washington in that
overtime game,” said Landry.
“There’s no doubt they have the
edge because quarterback Billy
Kilmer is probably having his
greatest year.”
Told the Cowboys had been made
early one-point favorites by the
oddsmakers in Las Vegas, Landry
just shook his head: “I don’t know
how they make the odds, either, for
whatever that’s worth.”
/ou
second half consisted mainly of a
battle of free throws. The Aggies
came out on top, shooting a remark
able 72 per cent of their attempted
free throws.
Sam Houston did out-rebound
the Aggies by seven, but their
downfall was in the turnover de
partment. The Bearkats yielded 36
turnovers to the Ags while A&M
gave up only 15.
Gough and Morisse were the high
scorers for A&M, getting 18 and 16
points respectively. Auclair had 11
points while Margaret Byrne scored
7.
Dana Callaway, Beth Mamaliga,
Carol McAllister, and Diane Quitta
also contributed to the final score.
Quitta led in assists with 10.
After the holidays. Coach Kay
Don’s team will resume its regular
season play against the University of
Houston January 20 at 5:15 p.m. in
G. Rollie White Coliseum.
