    THE BATTALION
TUESDAY, DEC. 9, 1975
ROXIE HEARN
Assistant Editor
“Local’ content has been severely
lacking in The Battalion these last
few weeks. Campus news coverage
has been sparse (with the exception,
of course, of sports), while city
stories have been virtually nonexis-
tant.
The Wednesday, Nov. 26 edition
had two campus stories on the front
page, surrounded by four lengthy
wire service articles. Worse yet, last
Thursday’s had only a single three-
inch story, devoting the remaining
space to the Associated Press.
Sports has definitely not been
lacking. In fact, the issues before
and after the Texas game were al
most totally dominated by sports.
The only non-sports page in the en
tire pre-game paper was Page 1.
campus coverage sparse
The post-game paper lost even that.
No doubt the game was impor
tant, but sports coverage is just one
part of the service a student news
paper should provide. It should
never let a big game overcome all
other aspects of its coverage.
Small print appears to be here to
stay. In fact, it will probably even
move to the inner pages. Granted,
there have been many,complaints,
but Gael Cooper, director of stu
dent publications, says the reduced
size has increased the “total infor
mation output” of the paper.
The same old problem of over
rating the power of university com
mittees struck again this past week.
A story in Wednesday’s paper said,
“The newly re-organized Student
Campus Planning Advisory Com
mittee voted unanimously to change
the site of the proposed varsity ten
nis courts. ”
According to the chairman of that
committee, the facts are much less
colorful. The committee voted to
recommend that the Student Senate
request the Board of Regents to re
consider its selection of the tennis
court site. Not quite so emphatic, is
it? An advisory committee can’t
change anything; it can only rec
ommend.
A similar over-ranking involved a
story on the Traffic Panel. The arti
cle said the panel voted to prohibit
all motor vehicle traffic on campus
malls and sidewalks. Until the
reader reaches the fourth para
graph, he doesn’t realize the deci
sion was only a recommendation
and is subject to the approval of the
vice-president for student services
and university President.
Both stories appeared with
equally misleading headlines, still
giving the committees undue pow
er.
One of those few campus stories
that appeared on the front page of
the pre-game edition concerned
“protect-the-campusitis.’ From the
negative response it had drawn,
(part of which was printed in “Listen
Up ’) it probably had no place in the
entire paper, much less on Page 1.
