Hogs dominate meet;
Aggie track takes fourth
By paul McGrath
Battalion Sports Editor
Again it was the twosome of Rice’s
Jeff Wells and the entire Arkansas
squad which dominated yesterday’s
District VI cross country meet held
at the Austin Country Club.
The six-mile race which qualified
four teams and eight other indi
vidual runners for the nationals
meet at Penn State this weekend,
was won by the Hogs while Wells
took the individual honors with a
time of 29:40.
The Texas A&M squad of Coach
Ted Nelson grabbed one of the team
berths with a fourth place finish.
The Aggies were a scant point be
hind the Rice Owls, gathering 83
marks- to Rice’s 82. A&M was led by
the fifth place finish of sophomore
Bruce Smith, clocked at 30:31.
Manfred Kohrs and Kyle Heffner
took 18th and 19th respectively for
A&M. Jacob Yemme was the Ag
gies’ fourth man with Charles Cottle
taking the fifth spot.
The Razorbacks placed their first
five runners in the top ten. Their
excellent job of team running netted
them the meet’s low score of 23
points. Randy Melancon and Niall
O’Shaughnessey, with second and
third finishes, paced the Razorbacks
who only a week ago took the
Southwest Conference title.
The University of Texas landed in
the No. 2 spot with 70 points, de
spite not having a single runner
finish in the top ten. y
The finish by the Ags qualified
the entire squad to go to the na
tional meet. However, because of
financial problems, only a few
members of the team will be al
lowed to make the trip.
“Bruce really ran well,’ said
Coach Nelson. “Manfred was run
ning well, too, until he got a back
cramp at the three-mile mark. He
probably would have been in the
top ten.
Nelson was not totally satisfied
with the entire team’s performance,
however. “We ran only fair as a
team. We didrt’t have a good team
race, he said.
“But we re young. We got a lot of
experience today,” Nelson said.
“We’ve accomplished a lot this year.
We’ve done a lot better in cross
country than we’ve done in the past
15 years. This is the first time
A&M has been represented at na
tionals.
“We re looking forward to next
year, most of our people are coming
back. We lose only Cottle, a senior,
out of our first five today, said Nel
son.
The national meet concludes
cross country action for the Ags who
finished fifth in conference. The in
door track season gets underway in
January.

Sharon Boyle and Martha Sartain
competed in the AIAW national
cross country championship this
past Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
Women from over 50 universities
ran in the tough, three mile race.
Boyle finished 83rd with a time of
20:03 and Sartain finished 126th
with a time of 21:03.
Boyle is a sophomore from Hous-
toh and Sartain is a freshman from
Irving. This was the first year for
both women to run in cross country.
Coach Dave Williams says, “It was a
very rough course. Considering
their youth and inexperience, they
did very well.

Women’s volleyball team loses
state tournament to end season
The women’s volleyball team
failed to reach the finals at the state
tournament this past weekend in
Austin, thus ending their season on
a disappointing note. Lamar took
first place in the tournament with
Texas Woman’s University coming
in second and University of Houston
taking third.
began by playing the University of
Texas, losing by a margin of 13-15,
15-9, and 7-15.
The Ags were in one of the tough
est pools and they lost some very
closely contested matches. They
This loss in their first match was a
hard defeat for the Aggies. Coach
Laura Kitzmiller says, “The loss to
UT was the straw that broke the
camel’s back. ” The women went on
to play Texas Tech and TWU, again
losing by thin margins.
Overall, the Aggies had a pretty
successful season. Going into the
state tournament, they had won 27
out of 40 matches and were ranked
among the top eight teams in Texas.
This is exceptional when consider
ing that the toughest volleyball
competition in the entire United
States comes from Texas and
California.
Looking hack. Coach Kitzmiller
says, “We started out real well this
year and we had a very, very busy
season. We just didn’t seem to pull
it out in the important games. ”
