Well it isn’t yesterday, it’s today and I’m still excited, it s still football season and SMU is coming to town. I won’t bother you with what happened in the SMU game last year because you’ve heard that enough already. I will talk about that weekend in general and what it meant to the Aggies. The Aggies entered that weekend with an almost sure trip to the Cotton Bowl but if something happened they had a sure trip to the Gator Bowl. There was a deal with the Gator Bowl between A&M and Texas that the loser of the Aggie-Longhorn game would go to that one since the winner would go Cotton pickin . That deal was made the week before the A&M-SMU and Baylor- Texas games. Even if one of the schools slipped the deal woidd still stand because the winner of the Aggie-Longhorn game woidd still go to the Cotton Bowl. Everyone looked great. The Aggies and Longhorns were taken care of and the poor Baylor Bears were going to have to stay home. Well, one of the schools did slip; A&M lost to SMU. After that game word seeped into the Aggie dressing room that Baylor had just gone ahead of Texas in Waco. There were cpiite a few smiles and everyone was plenty happy that the Horns were getting beat. Oh, if we only knew then what we know now. So what everyone knew couldn t happen did and we spent the holidays watching TV. It’s another year and this time there has been no deal, that’s illegal now until Nov. 15. That’s not far off and you can bet your bottom dollar that there are lots of Bowl folks who want to see the Aggies in their Bowl. The Gator, Sun, Orange and Bluebonnet Bowls all would like to see the Aggies in their post season affairs. The Orange Bowl hinted yesterday that they may even wait past the Nov. 15 signing time because the teams that they wanted still had important games left on their schedules. A&M and Texas are both on the Orange Bowl list along with Ohio State and Michigan. Penn State, Florida, and Alabama are also on the list. That s a short list but it’s even shorter when you figure that either Ohio State or Michigan is going to the Rose Bowl, either A&M or Texas is going to the Cotton Bowl and Alabama has just about decided on going to the Sugar Bowl. It’s nice to be wanted. The Bowl talk will be out in full force after this weekend’s action and this weekend could be more important than one thinks. If Rice could (like they have three of the last four years) knock off’Arkansas, it would mean that the A&M-Texas game would indeed decide the Cotton Bowl host with the loser going to another bowl. The Texas A&M Women’s Gym nastics Team opened their 75-76 season with a dual meet against TCU. The overall Class I, ad vanced, team title was won by the Aggies, 62.70 points to TCU’s 58.70 points. The Class II, intermediate, team title was captured by TCU, 53.15 points to A&M’s 46.55 points. In Class I Vaulting, A&M s Be linda Arnwine took first with a score of 8.35 while A&M’s Tina Martin placed second with 7.15 points. The Class II vault was won by A&M’s Lisa Milofsky scoring 7.60. Belinda Arnwine won the Class I Balance Beam scoring 8.20; Tina Martin placed 3rd with a 6.70; Lynn Sulak was 4th with a 6.60. In Class II Balance Beam, Lisa Milofsky was first, 6.65; Kevan Gunter placed 2nd, 5.50. In Advanced Floor Exercise, Be linda Arnwine was 2nd scoring 7.85; next was Tina Martin with a 7.20. Lisa Milofsky was second, 8.05, and Kevan Gunter placed fourth, 7.50 in Intermediate Floor Exer cise. Class 1 Uneven Parallel Bars was won by Belinda Arnwine, 7.45, next was Joan Marshall, 7.30 and 4th was Tina Martin, 5.90. Class II Bars was won by Lisa Milofsky, 4.65. Belinda Arnwine was the Class I All-Around Gymnast scoring a total of 31.85 points in all four events. Lisa Milofsky captured the Class II All-Around title with 26.95 points. A&M’s coach, Jan Elledge was pleased with the performances of all the team’s members. The Aggies will host a Class I meet with the University of Texas, Nov. 12, 6:30 p.m. at the Bryan High Gym, On Nov. 19, Classes II & III will travel to Stephenville for a dual meet with Tarleton State. If Arkansas goes out this weekend and the Ags and Longhorns win, it would assure both teams of a bowl because any of the “biggies would like to have a deal where they could have either A&M or Texas. A&M and Texas would love nothing better than to be able to have a deal with some bowl that would take care of both of them. All of this is just guessing, but things look good in Aggieland at this time. They looked good this time last year but everyone has a year s experience and they know what it’s like to not be in a bowl when they deserve to be in one. It won’t happen again this time.
