Local funeral director Russ Hill-
ier, whose father, Charles, died
Friday, had good words about the
service.
“Last week (early October) we
had an occasion to use Sherrill’s
service — my father, who’s 83, had
a massive coronary.
“We called Sherrill and the hos
pital. In 6 p.m. traffic, it only took
them seven minutes to drive two
and a half miles.
“The EMT (emergency medical
technician) knew what to do. He
even ran the suction machine in the
hospital emergency room.”
“Sherrill is probably no better or
worse than his predecessors,’
Trowbridge said. He added that
the public will get no better service
than it’s willing to pay for.
Tomorrow: A look at Sherrill’s
equipment and personnel and ef
forts by local government to im
prove the service.

New York governor
requests aid bill
WASHINGTON — New York
Gov. Hugh L. Carey told Congress
Tuesday that unless a bill to aid
deficit-ridden New York City is on
President Ford’s desk by early
November, both the city and state!
iwill go into default.
| Carey told a House economic
- stabilization subcommittee that the
Ford administration’s reluctance to
help New York indicates the White
House “is content to allow the fate
of 17 million Americans and the
economy of our nation to twist
slowly in the wind ...”
Carey testified one day after the
New York state fiscal watchdog
committee for New York City ap
proved an austerity plan that will
cut the city’s budget by $724 mill
ion over the next three years and
slash thousands more municipal
workers from the payroll.
The governor told the subcom
mittee today that “the entire world
is watching to see if the Congress of
the United States will prove, once
again, that our government can
take care of its people.”
Carey said that if federal help is
not forthcoming, the city will de
fault in early December “and then
the state of New York, its vital
agencies, many of its school dis
tricts and many of its local units of
government will be forced into de
fault soon afterwards.”
The state has run out of re-1
sources to help the city, he said.
Unless Congress can pass a bill and
have it on the President’s desk by
early November, “Any help you
might consider will he too late to he
of consequence, he added.
Carey, head of the Emergency
Financial Control Board, startled
other board members Monday
night when he told a meeting of the
City Club that 55,000 jobs would
he eliminated by 1978.
