Mike Holmes, in a go-kart, huz- jand skidded through the course allat 56 seconds. Some members the sports car club dido t find the tlsvery funny. “It’s not even a car, some com plied. Despite the muttering, Holmes ioh home two gold-engraved beer mugs — one for winning his class (he was the only entry in the under- three-liter modified) and another for turning in the top time of the day. Other winners in the 22-entry, eight-category event were: —Charles Hahn in a Datsun 240-Z, 1:01. He won a run-off with Mike Young, also in a 240-Z, after they tied in regular competition. Hahn s best time was 1:00.1 and Young’s best was 1:00 flat. A margin of two-tenths of a second was re quired for a clear-cut win, so the men had to run again. An antocross is an event run on a short racetrack which is alxmt half turns and twists. “The whole idea of autocrossing is to have roadracing competition for streetable vehicles, ” Fraser Border, one of the organizers of the event, said. “It s run, usually, on a small park ing lot — it doesn’t require an ex pensive track. It allows competition and improves driving skills and makes better and safer street driv ers. “As far as times to the thing go, there’s more to the driver than the car itself.” Of course, there's alway s the go- karts. Fraser explained that the low- speed, multi-cornered antocross track is a sitting duck for a go-kart, the go-kart is so much smaller than an automobile that it can treat the antocross track like a race track. A car has to be much more precise in its maneuvers on the narrow autoc ross track, he said. .ONfl- IADIN0 ells NTER 731 E»| ?fl Aggie Charge Accounts I5:30 846-5816 liftUM Si'vfer} _ bfcAd cVtoVcC>‘ ijourf s‘iWc^ j^LirQUoi-S^ choker (r«3?Y4 0 -)j Vdaysonlu WJf.pct-22 Compiled by TONY GALLUCCI B&ttaLotv Sports Editor The World Series was postponed for the third day in a row . . . wet grounds . . . new starting time 8:30 tonight Boston time . . . that s 7:30 here . . . ABA moves to disband Associated Press NEW YORK — The American Basketball Association, four days away from opening its 1975-76 sea son, dropped one franchise Monday and moved to force a merger of the other nine with the established Na tional Basketball Association. The Baltimore Claws, who played last season as the Memphis Sounds, won’t play this year under any name. The ABA announced Mon day that the franchise was being disbanded, its players dispersed among the schedule shuffled to re flect the change. And, in a surprise move, the ABA had seven of its teams follow earlier moves by New York and Denver and send telegrams to NBA Com missioner Larry O Brien asking to be admitted into the NBA. Both Denver and New York, acting with out ABA approval, bad applied for membership in the NBA as expan sion franchises on Sept. 24. The developments came as the ABA headed into its ninth season. The league had hoped that its new commissioner, Dave DeBnsschere, would be able to land a television contract or force a merger. The telegrams sent to O Brien said that each of the seven clubs — Kentucky, Virginia, St. Louis, In diana, San Antonio, San Diego and Utah — would like to join the NBA for the 1976-77 campaign.
