THE BATTALION
TUESDAY, OCT. 21, 1975
Events feature
freestyle, slalom
A scattering of determined
skateboarders turned out Saturday
to try their luck in a three-event
contest sponsored by the A&M
Skateboard and Surf Club.
Gyrating and contorting, seven
contestants put their bodies and
their boards through the paces dur
ing a freestyle riding event held in
the Grove. Mark Peckham won first
place in the event.
A downhill speed run on the ramp
over Wellborn Road attracted 11
skateboarders, most of whom
crashed into the wire fence before
completing their ride down. Chuck
St. Laurent won the competition.
The survivors then traveled to
Bryan High School Stadium for a
downhill slalom. Rick Rhodes de
feated a field of 12 to win the con
test.
All three winners were awarded
skateboards.

The number of infectious dis
eases reported by area doctors
are not conclusive in determin
ing the number of actual disease
cases. Dr. Raymond F. Ruck,
Acting Director of the Brazos
County Health Department,
said Thursday.
“The reports we receive are
really a sampling of what doc
tors are reporting in the
Bryan-College Station area.
Buck said.
Although the statistics max
not reflect the total number of
infectious diseases here, when
something breaks out doctors
usually report them with accu
rate numbers, he added.
The health department re
ported that gonorrhea cases
rose from 70 cases in August to
76 in September. Influenza
dropped from 38 cases in Au
gust to 13 in September. Infec-
nine cases in September from
one case in August.
Strep throat eases were re
ported down from 64 in August
to 52 in September.
“The increase in gonorrhea is
because of sexual promiscuity ,
increased knowledge about the
disease and the willingness of
infected persons to report it.
Buck said. It also could be re
lated to the increase in the
population of the area, he ad
ded.
The health department sends
out self-addressed postcards to
about 45 doctors in the twin
cities every week. Each month
the reports are compiled and
distributed to news media and
other agencies.
“We have to do it this way but
the only benefit we get from
publicizing these reports is
when there is a large breakout of
infectious diseases. Buck said.

THE AGGIELAND ’76
FOR
ORGANIZATIONS
AND CLUBS
In an attempt to set precedent concerning the conflict
of recognized versus unrecognized organizations and
clubs, The Aggieland ’76 is requiring organizations and
clubs desiring to be represented in the book BE RECOG
NIZED BY THE UNIVERSITY.
Even if an unrecognized organization or club has
bought pages in past Aggielands, if they want to be in
cluded this year the organization or club must go through
the recognition procedures established by the university.
An organization or club wanting to become recog
nized can do so at the Student Programs Office, second
floor of the MSC.
The Aggieland will accept no organization or club for
contracting space after Nov. 10, 1975.
All previously recognized organizations and clubs
plus those applying for recognition have until Nov. 10 to
contract space. After Nov. 10 there will be no further space
sold in the book and no exceptions will be made.
If any questions develop call Student Publications at
845-2611, ask for Debbie Stallings or Gary Baldasari.

VIENTIANE, Laos — Indepen
dence day celebrations held in Laos
this month marked the fulfillment of
a dream by North Vietnam s late re
volutionary leader Ho Chi Minh —
the dream of a Communist In
dochina. The celebrations also
cemented the power of the Pathet
Lao oxer the country.
The 30th anniversary festivities
saw the emergence of the Lao
People s Revolutionary party and its
leader, Kaysone Phomvihan, a 55-
year-old revolutionary with strong
ties to North Vietnam.
The real focus of the celebrations
was the Pathet Lao capital of Vieng
Xay, where top Communist leaders
from North and South Vietnam,
Cambodia and Laos met in a mini
summit which appeared to de
monstrate solidarity among the
three Indochina states.
Since the Communist victories in
Indochina last spring, Cambodia,
North and South Vietnam and Laos
each have shown a strong interest in
maintaining their national indepen
dence. Cambodia s close ties to
mainland China and the preference
of Vietnam and Laos for the Soviet
Union also haxe demonstrated that
the four countries would not, in
many cases, act xvith unanimity.
Prince Souphanoux ong tlienonv
inal leader of the pro-Conimunisi
Pathet Lao, stressed the common
origins of these revolutionary re
gimes in his remarks commemorat
ing the unsuccessful declarationol
independence from France after
World War II.
"Our Lao people are extremely
proud and jubilant to have been
under the clear-sighted leadership
of the ICP, he said. "Now file Lao
People s Rev olutionary party has
also written pages of wonderful his
ton.'
