I’m not the
Quarterback
By DAVID WALKER
Battalion Sports Writer
When Emory Bellard was talking about Bubba Bean
the other day at his press conference he said one thing that
really caught my ear.
Coach Emory told the reporters that Bubba’s stats were
impressive but something that they should look at was
that he didn’t get as many carries as all of the other
runners who have large totals.
Hallelujah!
It’s about time. Baylor Bear Cleveland Franklin has
been beating Bubba out of honors all season because he’s
been picking up great chunks of yardage but he’s also
been picking up great chunks of carries.
That’s what singles out Bubba from all the rest. They all
have tons of yards but very few have as few carries as the
number one Aggie.
Bean has 562 yards on 64 carries. Franklin has 562 yards
but he s had 113 carries. Bean’s average is 8.8 per carry
while Franklin has a 4.9 average.
Cleveland didn’t beat out Bubba this week for honors
though as the Aggie back was named to just about every
team there was to be named to.
He was Dallas Morning News offensive player of the
week. He made the United Press International national
backfield of the week and the Associated Press Southwest
Conference back of the week. And topped it off yesterday
by being named the Sports Illustrated offensive player of
the week.
It’s amazing what 190 yards on 9 carries can do for you.
One thing the 190 yards did do was to make Bubba the
number one Aggie on the all-time rushing list.
He passed a fella named Bob Smith who had 2,415
yards.
Now the first thing people will say is that Bubba played
four years to Smith’s three. Forget it. Smith had his total
on 439 carries. Bean has only carried the ball 402 times for
his 2,469 yards.
Smith’s big year was his junior year in 1950 when he
gained 1460 yards. His total through five games was 593
yards that season. Bubba has 562. He would have to
average 149 yards a game the rest of the way this season to
top Smith’s single season mark.
Coach Emory also said Tuesday that he thought Bubba
should be considered as an All-American. I’ve got to
agree, but whether or not he makes it remains to be seen.
One bright local scribe said that Bean would not be able
to gain huge amounts of yardage if he carried the ball as
many times as some of the other backs around the coun
try.
I was quick to disagree before the BS (bright scribe) told
me that Bubba would be too tired after he had made a
couple of his 90 yarders.
Going from Bubba to the offense in general, it’s nice to
see Texas A&M on the offensive page of the weekly na
tional statistics.
The NCAA has their presses set with Texas A&M on the
defense page but to be on the offense page is quite new for
the Aggies.
The Aggies are the number six team in the nation in
rushing with 324.2 per game average. Only Texas, Arkan
sas, Arkansas State, Georgia Tech and Ohio State are
ahead of the Aggies. That ain’t bad.

Back to defense for a few minutes, the Ags are number
three in total defense in the nation but are still number
one against the rush giving up only 69.4 yards per game.
And once again, that ain’t bad.

Basketballers’
practice started
THE BATTALION
THURSDAY, OCT. 16, 1975

Texas A&M basketball coach
Shelby Metcalf welcomed back the
top three scorers from his 1974-75
Southwest Conference champion
ship team when practice began
Wednesday for the 1975-76 season.
Sonny Parker and Barry Davis,
unanimous All-SWC performers
last year, and super-sub Ray
Roberts lead the returnees which
include senior Gates Erwin, junior
Steve Jones and sophomore Doug
Mezger.
But whether the Aggies will he
able to successfully defend their
crown will depend largely upon the
performance of some freshmen with
outstanding credentials. Metcalf
and assistants Norman Reuther and
Bob Gobin corralled the best group
offreshmen in A&M history. Nowit
will be up to the coaches to prepare
them for big league basketball.
New names to watch include
guard Karl Godine, 6-3, center Jar
vis Williams, 6-6, forward Joey
Robinson, 6-5, center Wally Swan
son, 6-8, forward Bob Middleton,
6-5, and center Bryan Holland, 6-6.
Godine and Williams earned All-
America honors while leading
Houston Kashmere to two state
championship and 78 consecutive
wins. Robinson was All-America at
Tulsa Memorial while Middleton
and Swanson were all-state in Il
linois.
“What it boils down to is that we
lost six good seniors and gained six
good freshmen. That is losing 24
years of experience, Metcalf said.
“Our strengths will be speed and
shooting. Our weaknesses will he
lack of size and experience.
