The Texas Tech Red Raiders of first-year coach Steve Sloan were the victims of both Bean’s heroics and their own ineptitude as A&M struck for four touchdowns in the second half to complete a 38-9 thrashing of the West Texans. The victory puts Coach Emory Bellard s squad in a three way tie with Arkansas (2-0) and Texas (1-0) for the Southwest Conference lead. Tech now goes to 0-2 and is virtually eliminated from the race. Although giving Tech their sec ond straight lopsided SWC defeat, the Aggies were on anything but firm ground in the first half. The Red Raiders, guided by the arms of Tommy Duniven and Rod ney Allison became the first team this year to score on the top ranked Aggie defense in the first half of play and also the first opponent to hold a A&M six-pointers on runs of 47 and 94 yards. (See feature, page 5.) Bean’s two scores came on the lead over Bellard s Bunch. In all, the Red Raider offense went airborne for 219 yards, 134 in the second half. Tech also embar rassed Melvin Robertson’s defen ders for 101 steps aground, another first for an A&M opponent this year. But while Tech was able to move the ball with some consistency, especially on passes against corner- back Willie Thompson, the defense answered nearly every threat with a big play, taking advantage of Tech miseries which led to three A&M touchdowns. However, the defen sive eleven lacked the awesome ap pearance the Aggie faithful have be come accustomed to recenth . The night belonged to Bean and the rest of the offense. The senior from Kirbyville scored the first two CONTEST Sheila Watson became the winner of two Cotton Bowl tickets when Bubba Bean be came the all-time A&M rushing leader on Saturdar. Bean sur passed the mark with 8:19 left on the clock in the third quarter of the Tech game. Watson s guess was one of only two for the third quarter of Tech and was but 13 seconds short of calling the exact time. Her guess: 8:32. Abln Zeman- ek was the onl\ other person to guess the third quarter with a prediction of 10:40 left on the clock. same play, taking an option pitch from quarterback David Shipman The Aggie offense, currently rated eighth in the nation, proved it could pick up the slack while the stellar A&M defense was having an off night. Their performance took away the constant pressure placed on the defense in prior games. Although not at their best, the defense did provide the offense with excellent field position, especially in the second half. A&M was able to crank up its offense from an average spot of its own 49-yard line. Tech meanwhile averaged their own 21. A&M must repair the holes in their defensive secondary this week as they prepare to meet the winless TCU Horned Frogs, one of the top passing teams in the nation. A&M cannot afford to look past TCU to the Baylor game. Last year’s lackluster performance against the Frogs was almost too close for com fort . Most eyes will be focused on the outcome of the Texas-Arkansas con test, the outcome of which will be decisive for the SWC leadership. Bean received superb downfield blocking from tackle Glen Bujnoch and receivers Richard Osborne and Carl Roaches. The play that set up Bean’s his toric gallop was a touchdown saving interception by Jackie Williams on the A&M one-yard line. William’s theft halted a potential go-ahead Tech drive opening the second half. Momentum then played its fickle tune after Bean’s gallop and sud denly the rout was on. The A&M offense had its prob lems with the Tech defense in the first half, getting only four first downs and 145 yards against the vir tual nine man line of the Raiders. Discounting Bean’s 47-yard TD, the Aggie offense averaged 1.4 yards per first down play and made only two of seven third down situa tions in the first half. Compare this to over seven yards per first down play and being suc cessful on five of six third down at tempts in the latter half.
