Testifying before the Senate
Watergate Committee in 1973, the
UCLA graduate with later jour
nalism and law degrees made a
widely repeated statement:
“American politics does not include
any history of or tolerance for sabot
age, espionage, perjury, forgery or
burglary.
“We ran for the California legisla
ture in 1950 and “saw the
emergence of what we called ‘Nixon
politics, but what will now be
known in history as ‘Watergate poli
tics’.
“Nothing since then,” he says,
“including Watergate and the
White House horrors, —has sur
prised me.
More recently an author and TV
commentator, the attorney has
political experience in the Peace
Corps. He was corps director in
Lima, Peru, and then Latin Ameri
can regional director for the prog
ram, in Washington.
Mankiewicz’ best-selling “Per
fectly Clear: Nixon from Whittier to
Watergate” and the sequel, “U.S.
vs Nixon,” chronicle the rise and fall
of his long-time political adversary.
Another book, “With Fidel,’ was
co-authored and also published this
year, as was “U.S. vs Nixon.” With
Fidel details his trip to Cuba in the
summer of 1974 and bis interview
with Castro.
Mankiewicz gives top priority
among his memberships and honors
to his inclusion on the White House

Citizens to install free
constitutional truth line
Associated Press
The statewide coordinator for
Citizens for the Texas Constitu
tion announced plans Thursday
to install a no-charge “Constitu
tional Truth Line to tell Texans
what is in the proposed new
state charter.
Rep. Ronald Earle,
D-Austin, asked for donations
for the WATS (Wide Area Tele
phone Service) line.
“Unlike our opposition, the
truth is important to us, and,
unlike our opposition, we have
limited financial resources,”
said Earle.
He attached to his statement
a memorandum of how “to get
the most advantage from the
STARS” — Lt. Gov. Bill Hob
by, Atty. Gen. John Hill,
Speaker Bill Clayton and others
who are supporting the new
constitution.
He proposed that they take
part in a speaking tour in the
final eight days prior to the Nov.
4 election and also suggested
that each “star” conduct at least
three press conferences a week
and spend two hours a day
answering the “Truth Line.”
R. A. Brookshire of Lufkin, a
new member of the steering
committee of a group opposing
the new constitution said, “This
proposed new constitution has
been written for the benefit of
the legislators, not the people.
Letting them set their own
salaries, and authorizing them
to call themselves into session,
and having unrestricted annual
sessions — these are all things
designed to take power away
from the people and give it to
members of the legislature.
Brookshire, president of a
grocery chain, McAllen lawyer
Charles Thompson Sr.; and
Mrs. Audrey Bruse of Canyon,
tax assessor-collector for Ran
dall county, were added to the
steering committee of Citizens
to Preserve the Texas Constitu
tion.
A supporter of the new con
stitution, former Chief Justice
Robert Calvert of the Texas
Supreme Court, said that the
Texas Farmers Union had en
dorsed the document and was
urging its 10,000-member
families to vote for all eight
propositions on the ballot.
Price Daniel Jr., chairman of
the 1974 Constitutional Con
vention, accepted an invitation
by Rep. Bill Blythe,
R-Houston, to debate the new
,rc£i.
