Barnum said Tuesday rising gasoline prices will cause American automobile owners to change their driving habits. “All of us will be driving less and driving more wisely,” Barnum said. Barnum said the private car will remain America’s primary mode of transportation if it is modified in both form and usage to meet new national concerns. The automobile must be changed in form and design, he said, and drivers must change their patterns of use to meet current energy and en vironmental challenges. “We have to move to a point where automobiles requires less energy, pollutes less and is less of a safety hazard,” Barnum said. “We must pursue the goals of re duced fuel consumption, cleaner air and increased safety deliberately and with the due respect for technical and economic implications but we must pursue them relentlessly.” Barnum spoke at the annual meet ing of the international Oil Industry Tires, Batteries, and Accessories Group. The trade organization in cludes suppliers and marketers of products sold at service stations. Barnum said he is confident both fuel economy and emission control goals are attainable, adding that the major question is the best way to meet them. “Fuel economy goals, unlike our emission and safety standards, should continue to be voluntary,” he said. “The fact is that fuel economy has market value.” He said there is no need for Con gress to legislate better gas mileage. “At the same time. Congress must be mindful of fuel efficiency when it legislates emission standards,” he said. Goals, Barnum said, can some times seem to point in different di rections. “Decreased emissions may exact a fuel economy penalty,” he said. “Smaller cars need less fuel, but may be more dangerous. I submit that this is a challenge to our much vau nted American ingenuity and that we will meet the challenge successful ly.” Test given six times Civil Service employment in formation and test applications are available to Texas A&M stu dents at the Placement Office.
