COLLEGE BRYAN, TEXAS 822-4552 GIVE ipiBiPIppIliBiPPIpPpipipIglfgl Associated Press DALLAS — Lester Hayes was so good at so many different sports that there was a good deal of discussion on what he should do when he graduated from Houston Wheatley High School. Illinois certainly wishes Hayes had chosen basketball or track instead of football. The Texas Aggie strong safety in tercepted two passes, batted down three more on blitzes and made five tackles Saturday in a 43-13 victory over the Fighting Illini. For the per formance, Hayes was named The As sociated Press Southwest Confer ence Defensive Player of the Week. Hayes once lost the state school boy 100 yard dash in a dead heat. The timers clocked him at 9.4. He was the Class 4A schoolboy 220 champ ion and was a six-foot center on Wheatley’s state champion basket ball team. “I didn’t want to play basketball in college because I felt I was too small,’ said Hayes, who now stands 6-foot-2. Hayes was the sixth man on Wheatley’s run-and-gun basketball team which averaged some 100 points per contest. He’s a junior now at Texas A&M and Texas A&M Coach Emory Bel- lard says of the ballhawk: “He can mortally fly and he will mortally knock the fire out of you. ” A&M defensive coordinator Mel vin Robertson delights in giving Hayes the signal to blitz the enemy quarterback on suspected passing downs. In one such instance last Saturday, Hayes nearly decapitated the Illini quarterback. “We like to do a lot of gambling and we can usually get away with it, ” said Hayes. Hayes said he likes to blitz be cause “our front seven does such a good job that it can get kind ol lone some back in the secondary at times.’ At Houston Wheatley, Hayes played defensive end and wasstefj enough to be an outside linelal for the Aggies in 1974.Now,® found a home at safety on one pyrekitt tl Any Variety FOX FROZEN os/ 1 Plcc'lY ViceiY 'SPECIAL CGiJTORN 50 FREE S&N GREEN STAMPS ■M farekit* »f 2 6 oz. pkgs.
