CANS LIGHT & REG. PEARL BEER r* 2700 S.TEXAS AVE Ali gains TKO win over Smokin’ Joe I I Associated Press MANILA — Muhammad Ali stopped Joe Frazier’s strength sapping body attack, pounding Frazier’s head lopsided with power ful blows that stopped the challenger after the 14th round here Wednes day morning to retain his world heavyweight championship. It was a war and Ali fired the most accurate and telling shots as he pounded and pounded rights and lefts to Frazier’s head in the 13th and 14th rounds that closed the chal lenger’s eyes and had him reeling. After Frazier groped to his corner after the 14th, trainer Eddie Futch signalled to referee Eddie Padilla Jr. that the game challenger could not continue. And the fight was stopped. At the end Frazier’s face was a mask of lumps. His eyes looked like glass and they were nearly swollen shut. The 31-year-old man simply was finished. But for a time it looked as if Smo kin’ Joe might become the third man in history to regain the heavyweight championship. From the fifth to the 11th rounds, Frazier had the best of it, jolting Ali with lefts and rights to the body and occasional bombs to the head. Ali desperately tried to find a solu tion to the relentless pursuit of the man he lost to in the first of their three fights. But Frazier kept charg ing. Then, with his title seemingly slipping away, Ali, who has risen so many times in his spectacular and controversial career, went for Frazier’s head. And it worked. At the opening of the 12th round, the 33-year-old champion, who had looked every bit his age in the six previous rounds, drilled six shots to Frazier’s head. According to comedian Bill Cosby, a recalcitrant Noah be came fed up with the conditions in which he was having to labor, especially with the malodorous aroma coming from the bottom of the ark. Noah spoke his grievances to the Lord, saying he could no longer continue his efforts. However, Noah did an immediate about face when the Lord asked, ‘‘Noah, how long can you tread water?" Well, the Waco Baptists have apparently been reading the scriptures lately because they have been keeping their heads above water for three games against first rate opposition, al though they don’t seem to be getting anywhere. Baylor has played to consecutive draws with Auburn and Michigan, both powerful teams but are having problems getting untracked this fall. It was the second straight Saturday for the Wolverines to end up in a dead heat also. Undefeated, the Bears have just cracked the top twenty list. Everyone better watch out. Big things are brewing in Grant TeafFs kettle. The Aggies have currently gone longer (91 games) than any other Southwest Conference team without kissing their sister. Texas is next with 78 untied games. The Horns set a SWC record for penalty yards last week with 169 against Texas Tech, erasing the Aggies old mark of 167 set in 1949, also against Tech. Speaking of penalties, A&M and Illinois were set back fora total of 275 yards, 34 more steps than the Ulini offense could muster. Darrel Royal, Daddy D to Austin fans, netted his 100th SWC win Saturday as his charges massacred the Red Raiders. A&M needs two wins to reach the 400 victory mark while Rice needs one more to hit 300. Bubba Bean passed Kyle Rote on the all-time SWC rushing list with his 158 yards against the Illini. He is now only six yards behind the number 13 man. Bill Burnett and is 217 yards shyol the A&M record of 2,415 held by Bob Smith. Thanks to Bean and his cohorts, the Aggies are now third in the conference in total offense after an inauspicious start at seventh. The Brazos Valley men have had to punt more than their SWC counterparts though, 23 times. The Hogs have only had to kick the ball away five times in three contests. The Aggie defense continues to dominate SWC stats, allowing an average of 140 yards a game. On the ground, the Cadets have retreated only 158 yards in 126 rushing attempts, or less than 1.3 yards per carry. If not for Chubby Phillips 46-yard touchdown gallop, the only rushing score against A&M, that average would be even more miniscule. Baylor is almost 100 yards behind the Ags in total defense, giving A&M a comfortable edge in that department.
