A test section was put down this month on Highway 69 north of Luf kin that handles a traffic load of over 6,000 vehicles a day. Dr. Claude J. Garriques, director of technical projects for the Societe National des Petioles d’Aquitaine, is working with Prof. Bob Callaway of the Texas Transportation Insti tute to evaluate a new sulfur-asphalt formula for quicker and cheaper road building. “The system has already proved itself in France where we have tested it in several sites during the last three years,” said Garriques. “In our method, sulfur is substi tuted for 20 to 40 per cent of the asphalt. “The advantage here is that the price of asphalt is skyrocketing while the price of sulfur continues to drop, he said. “This is due to the recovery of sulfur from oil, coal and even smokestacks. “Through our research we’ve found that adding sulfur makes a superior road-building material, while being about 15 per cent cheaper, and needs conventional paving equipment that is currently in use, Garriques said. An evaluation of the process will extend over the next two years by. the Federal Highway Administra tion and the State Department of Highways and Public Transporta tion. TTI with the State of Texas will monitor and evaluate the road sur faces. A color movie sound tracked in French and English is also being made of the construction and testing of the road. However, about 10 per cent of those students at the MSG registering to vote in Brazos County said that they do. Bill McLeod, president ofTexas Voting Systems in Bryan said Tuesday that about 100 students on the registration form listed a post office box as a temporary address. The company computerizes voter registration for Brazos County. “Unless we know where they live, we cannot register them to vote,” McLeod said. He said lie is returning all forms listing only temporary addresses to the A&M Student Government office for correc tion. If a student remembers listing a box number as an address it must be changed to a place of residence, McLeod said. He explained that a residence is the exact location where a person lives. The law says we must haVe that. We need it so that we can put them in the proper precinct,” he said. The registration form requests a permanent address as well as a temporary one. For instance, if a person decides to vote in Brazos County but has a permanent address in another county he must also list his Brazos County address as a temporary one. McLeod said that a box number may be used only as a mailing address. “If the students correct the addresses, they will still be able to vote in the next election (Nov. 4), he added. “We will register them as of the date they originally signed up.” The SG office will sponsor another registration campaign Sept. 29 through Oct. 3. However, those who need to correct the forms need only to visit the SG office anytime before Oct. 3 if they want to vote in November.
