Smith, the Texas A&M Cross Coun
try team outpointed three rivals to
take first place in a quadrangular
meet in Baton Rouge Saturday.
The Aggies had the low score of
39 points to win the meet, their first
of the year. Alabama followed with
43 points while Houston and LSU
had 46 and 93 points.
The point system is based on one
point for first, two for second, three
for third and so on. There were 27
places in all. As a man places his
points are added to the overall team
score to determine the meet win-
Smith finished second in the
meet with a time of 20:06. Charles
Cottle and Kyle Heffner were
fourth and fifth with clockings that
were only a second apart. Cottle
came in at 20:18 and Heffner at
20:19.
Jacob Yemme was the fourth
Aggie in the top ten, finishing tenth
with a time of20:39. Manfred Kohrs
was eighteenth at 21:20, Lance
Mitchell twentieth at 21:46 and
Walter Jachimowicz twenty-first at
21:49.
“If you win the first one it means
you can’t lose them all, ’’joked assis
tant Track Coach Ted Nelson. “Ac
tually I was a little surprised that we
won. I did think that we would run
well. I thought at first that Houston
had won, and so did the Alabama
coach.
Nelson said that the victory was
“a compliment to our runners’ be
cause of the fast pace. Jachimowicz’s
time would have been fourth last
year. LSD’s Tom Duple, who won
the four-mile race two years ago
with a 20:45, was only 12 seconds off
that time this year hut could not
crack into the top ten finishers.
“Kyle (Heffner) really ran well.
The two guys I was the most pleas
antly surprised with were Kyle and
Cottle,’ said Nelson. Cottle is the
only senior on the cross country
squad.
One of the keys to winning in
cross country besides running well
is to group a team’s finishers as high
as possible so as to get as low score
and thereby force the opponent
down. “We have a good chantr
he a group running team," Nds*
said. “No one ran poorly Satini
