Each week about 100 women,
many of them Texas A&M Univer
sity students, visit a new Planned
Parenthood clinic here.
The clinic, which opened in June,
is located at 301 Patricia in College
Station, about one block from the
north side of the Texas A&M cam
pus.
“We refer students to Planned
Parenthood, but we have no way of
knowing how many actually go,
said Frances Gough of the Univer
sity Health Center. The university
offers a similar clinic, but only on
Wednesday. The new College Sta
tion clinic is open 10 a. m. to 5 p.m.
Monday through Friday.
Planned Parenthood services are
available to any woman at least 18
years old. Younger women are elig
ible if they are married, have had a
child, are sent by another agency or
have parental permission.
“It’s not significant to us whether
they are married or not,” said
Elaine Taylor, nurse practitioner at
the center. “What matters is
whether they need birth control or
not.
“We believe that every child
should be a wanted child, Taylor
said. “We encourage all students to
come to us for birth control if they
feel the need.
A woman’s first visit takes about
an hour and a half. She is educated
about different kinds of birth con
trol, and takes a physical examina
tion after filling out some forms.
“I’d say at least 95 percent of our
patients choose to use the pill, said
Taylor about the usual result of a
visit.
After six months the patient
should return for a check-up, she
said.
Taylor’s training as a nurse prac
titioner consists of six months of
study in gynecology in addition to
being a Registered Nurse. She sc
reens patients to make sure they are
healthy but she cannot diagnose or
treat illnesses.
If a patient needs treatment, she
is referred to a physician.
The staff of Planned Parenthood
also includes a Licensed Vocational
Nurse, Wanda Palermo, and a med
ical records aide.
Patients often pay about $16 for
the examination and a seven month
supply of birth control pills. The
cost to the clinic is about $57. Fi
nancial aid, however, is available.
“The bulk of our support comes
from donations,” said Palermo.
“Many of our patients don’t pay at
all. If they meet certain income and
family size guidelines, they qualify
for free services under a state
grant.”
At the end of the first visit pa
tients are asked to evaluate the
center.
One said the center made her
feel, “much more like a person
rather than a patient to he shuffled
through.

Bike path
studies
to begin

Concern for the safety of pedest
rians and bicyclists has prompted a
study of walkways and bikepaths in
College Station.
The Brazos County League of |
Women Voters has determined that
increased congestion and parking
problems indicate a need for more
protected pathways.
Some time ago the city marked a
bikepath on Jersey 'Street and
another on Glade Street.
The study committee completed
a sample traffic count one day in
June. The count was taken from 6:30
a.m. to 1 p.m. on the corner of
Glade and Southwest Parkway. In
six and a half hours of summer traffic
1,418 cars and 246 bicycles were
counted.
' On Sept. 16 and 19 there will be a
traffic count of 12 areas traveled by
school children and Texas A&M
University students and employes,
Mrs. E. E. Hazen said. Hazen is the
co-chairman of the Walkways and
Bikepaths Study Committee of the
League.
The study will include a survey of
College Station public school stu
dents. The students will be ques
tioned on their means of transporta
tion to and from school.
After the League collects the
data, Hazen said, other organiza
tions such as the Environmental Ac
tion Council (EAC) and the Texas
A&M Wheelmen, will further study
the need for additional bikepaths
and walkways. Results of the traffic
study should he available by mid-
October.
The EAC hopes to help coordi
nate a similar study for the city of
Bryan, EAC spokesman Timothy
Rose said.
Volunteers are needed on Sept.
16 and 19 for one-or-two-hour ses
sions, Hazen said. The committee,
which has no budget or allotted
funds, has been completely staffed
by volunteers so far, she said.
