THE BATTALION Page 11
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1975
Aggies rank 9th in poll
Associated Press
The Oklahoma Sooners are more
blase — ore more realistic — this
year about being the pre-season
choice as the nation’s top college
football team, and Coach Barry
Switzer isn’t sure they even deserve
it.
“The cats around here don’t think
about it so much any more,” said
All-American half-back Joe
Washington in Norman, Okla. “It’s
the final outcome after all that blood
and sweat and tears that counts.”
Washington pointedly noted that
the Sooners were No. 1 in last year’s
preseason poll, too — and lost the
slot after a relatively narrow victory
over Southwest Conference champ
ion Baylor.
This year the Sooners racked up
54 first-place votes and 1,184 points
from the sports writers and
sportscasters who make up The As
sociated Press board.
The board voted Alabama sec
ond, including one first-place vote;
Michigan, also with one first-place
vote, third, and Ohio State, with
three votes for No. 1, fourth. South
ern California was picked fifth; Penn
State, with one first-place vote,
sixth; Nebraska seventh; Auburn
eighth; Texas A&M ninth, and
Notre Dame 10th.
The second top 10 positions went
to Texas, Michigan State, North
Carolina State, UCLA, Florida,
Arizona, Maryland, Tennessee, Ar
kansas and Stanford.
Switzer was more concerned with
the three meager points on the
scoreIxiard after Saturday’s scrim
mage than with the top-heavy vote.
‘‘We re not deserving today.
We re not ready to play by any
means,” said Switzer, whose record
in two years as a head coach is
blemished only by a tie with South
ern California.
He was obviously upset with
Saturday’s practice and said the
team would work every day this
week instead of tapering off, as he
had planned.
The top rating last year was a
marvelous balm for a team on proba
tion — and banned from TV and
howls. The probation and howl
banishment are over, but the TV
ban remains through this season.

“I guess the workout was about as
good as it could have been in this
kind of weather,” Teaff said.
Starting center Gary Gregory of
Kermit and safety Ken Quesen-
berry of Garland returned to full
duty Tuesday after minor injuries
Texas Christian University
Horned Frogs quarterback Lee
Cook suffered a knee strain in Fort
Worth Tuesday, but team doctors
said he will be ready in time for the
Frogs’ season opener against the
University of Texas-Arlington.
Three freshmen have been pro
moted by the Frogs because of in
juries to starters. James Price, a de
fensive end from Lynch, Ky., was
moved to the first unit while James
McMath of Nacogdoches moved to
the second unit and Darryl Lowe
moved to strong safety with the sec
ond team.
★★★
Defensive tackle Allen Rickman
and offensive halfback Jimmy
Walker returned to work Tuesday
with the Texas Longhorns after
being sidelined with injuries.
Coach Darrell Royal in Austin
also moved reserve linebacker Vic
tor Moore to tight end to bolster
that position.
The Longhorns open the 1975
season here Sept. 13 against Col
orado State.
★★★
The August heat drained the zip
out of the Baylor Bears during their
Tuesday workout in Waco, but
Coach Grant Teaff said the energy
will be there when the Bears open
here against Mississippi Saturday
kept them on the sidelines since last
Thursday.
Teaff said that, physically, the
team is ready for the opener.
