Hoffa jury
calls many

DETROIT — Some 70 witnesses
will be called before a federal grand
jury investigation the disappear,
ance of former Teamsters President
Jimmy Hoffa, the government said
Tuesday.
The jury will begin hearing wit.

Among the early witnesses, Ozer
said, is to he Hoffa’s foster son 41.
year-old Charles “Chuckie” O'B
rien, who was described by sources
as a key figure to unraveling tli e
four-week-old Hoffa mystery.
Hoffa dropped from sight July 30
after he reportedly left home fora
scheduled meeting with Detroit
Mafia figure Anthony “Tony jack”
Giacalone.
Ozer declined to say who else was
being called to testify, huthesaidno
immediate members of the Hoffa
family had been subpoenaed.
The scope of the grand jury probe
came to lightTuesdayduringahear-
ing before U.S. District Court
Judge Fred Kaess.
O’Brien’s attorney, James Bur
dick, requested that a subpoena or
dering O’Brien to appear before the
jury on Tuesday, Sept. 2 he delayed
two days because O Brien is moving
his family from Arkansas to Florida,
Kaess ordered O’Brien to appear
Sept. 3.
Ozer declined to say whether he
expects any substantial new evi
dence to come out of the grand jury.
Sources close to the probe said
investigators did not have enough
evidence in the Hoffa case to seek
indictments at this time.
The sources said federal agents
have found no trace of Hoffa since
the former union boss disappeared
from a restaurant parking lot in the
Detroit suburb of Bloom field Town
ship.
The source said investigators are
operating on the theory that Hoffa
was ordered kidnapped and killed
by individuals high in the Mafia be
cause his attempt to regain union
power threatened their interests.
The source added that inves
tigators believe alleged numerous
business dealings between the
Teamsters and underworld figures
might he soured by Hoffa’s return to
the union presidency.
Nigerian shot
by ‘accident’
in Dallas
DALLAS — A Dallas city
policeman killed a 28-year-old
Nigerian foreign exchange student
late Monday night in the mistaken
belief that the victim was a suspect
in the robbery of a drive-in food
store.
A police department spokesman
said Emmanuel Olajide Olatunji
died about one hour after he was
shot in the head by patrolman
Clovis J. Williams. Olatunji was a
student at the predominantly hlack
Bishop College in Dallas.
Authorities said the policeman
fired when he saw Olatunji reach
into his jacket as if to draw a
weapon.
Police gave this account of the in
cident:
Two blacks handed clerk Ina Jean
Washington a note demanding
money. One of the pair drew hack
his shirt to display a pistol in his
belt.
The two fled after the clerk
emptied her cash register of an un
disclosed amount of money. They
also took a carton of beer and a sack
of potato chips.
A police car cruising nearby ar
rived at the store seconds later. Wil
liams, 43, and patrolman Jeffrey
Kirksey, 33, said a white couple ap
peared to point at two young blacks
at a nearby gasoline station.
Kirksey leveled a shotgun and or
dered the two “to freeze . One man
complied. Olatunji ran and au
thorities said he made a move as if 1°
draw a weapon from his jacket. Wil
liams fired.
Later, the store clerk said neither
Olatunji nor the other man were in
volved in the robbery.
The case will he routinely refer
red to a county grand jury.
UT students
crowd campus,
area police
AUSTIN, Tex. (AP) —University
of Texas students have struck a blow
for mass transit.
Police issued some 750 parking
tickets Monday as students re
turned to register for the fall semes
ter.
They were parked all over the
place,’’ said a patrolman.
Sixteen cars were impounded fo r
parking at a bus stop on the camp llS
main street.
