l-formation most popular
among collegiate teams
The I formation popularized by
Southern Cal coach John McKay
will regain its position as the most
popular offense in major-college
football this fall by a 41-33 margin
over the triple-option Veer, assum
ing all coaches do what they’ve an
nounced.
The Veer made famous by Hous
ton coach Bill Yeoman enjoyed a
39-35 edge over the I last season,
after the I had been the most popu
lar in 1973 and 1972.
What about the Wishbone triple
option? Certainly, it has gained a lot
of publicity since Texas coach Dar
rell Royal (helped by current Texas
A&M head coach Emory Bellard)
developed it in 1968, won 30
straight games with it, then saw
Wishboners Oklahoma and
Alabama win big the last four sea
sons.
However, the Wishbone requires
a surplus of top running backs, and
only 16 majors plan to use it as their
primary 1975 offense in a survey by
NCAA Statistics Service — the
same number as last season (com
pared to 10 in 1973 and 16 in 1972).
So diverse is college football that
no offense held a majority in recent
years. But the I has had a strong
following since McKay won the na
tional championship with it in 1962.
The faithful include such perennial
powers as Ohio State, Michigan and
Nebraska. The biggest increase this
2nd session
intramurals
end today
The intramural games for the sec
ond summer session are now over
(or will be over by Wed. at 5:00).
The Battalion would like to con
gratulate all the winners.
Winnefs by events were the Bull
dogs, in softball (slow-pitch). In
racketball singles, Clessen Martin
conquered and in handball singles
Jeff Bronson took first place. In
handball doubles Don Hodges and
Dennis Corrington were first.
The Dirty Old Men came in first
in three-m^in volleyball and the
RummYes took the lead in three-
man basketball. In tennis doubles
Culin Bludau and Katjep Abdoel
Kadir won first place and in tennis
singles the winners haven’t been
announced yet.
Intramurals are over until the fall
semester and until then you can
look over this intramural calendar
and try to figure out what you want
to play during the fall.
Here is the fall semester in
tramural calendar and the closing
entry dates:
1975-1976 INTRAMURAL CALENDAR
fall, though, is among those who call
their offense “Multiple. ”
New teams adopt I-formation
The biggest reason the I teams
are up is simply that five of the
seven new majors use the I (and the
only major to quit football — Tampa
— used the Veer). The five new
I-formation majors boasted a
42-13-1 record last year and they
include the Division II national
playoff champion, Central Michigan
(12-1), plus Louisiana Tech (11-1),
loser only to Central Michigan in
the playoffs.
One of the new majors, Fullerton
State, has a new head coach, Jim
Colletto, who is switching the team
to the Veer. Of the other 17 major-
college head coaches new on the job
this fall, only eight will switch for
mations. Three are going to the I —
Louisville’s Vince Gibson, Kansas
State’s Ellis Rainsberger and
Washington’s Don James (all three
teams used the Veer last season).
21 teams junk offenses
Overall, only 21 majors said they
planned a complete change in their
offense (less than half the 43 switch
ers at this time last year).
Formation preferences are
evenly spread in most areas, but in
terestingly, the Veer leads the
I-formation 6-0 in the Southeastern
Conference, while it’s just the re
verse in the Big Ten, and eight of
nine Mid-American Conference
teams use the I.
However, players win games, not
playbooks. Because personnel is
more uncertain at lower levels,
most offensive ideas originate at the
high school level, are made popular
by the colleges, then picked up by
the pros (for instance, the I was used
in high schools long before McKay
made it famous and now some call it
the “Pro I”).
