Page 8 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 1975 Tickets become scarce for LSU-A&M game This week I’ve just got some ran dom thoughts about sports . . . Do you know what the best in vestment in the United States is these days? Tickets to the A&M- LSU football game. I’ve already heard of tickets going for $40 and up by the scalpers. If they are that high this early, just imagine how high they will be on the day of the game. The scalper catchers will be out in full force in Baton Rouge. By the way, I would hate to see any of you get picked up for selling your tickets for a price higher than face value so if any of you have tic kets that you want to get rid of, just give me a call and I’ll be glad to take them off of your hands .... Spetiking of football, in the 1975 edition of the Texas A&M Football Press Guide there is a section cal led, “They Went That-A-Way,’’ where it lists the most one-sided games in Aggie history. Of the ten worst defeats, three of them came in 1970, 56-13 to Ohio State, 45-6 to Arkansas, and 52-14 to Texas. On another page it says, “Emory Bel- lard has turned Texas A&M’s foot ball program around and built the Aggies into a national power. ” That is some fast turning around. My hat is tipped to Coach Emory .... The basketball program isn’t far behind. Just off the best season in the history of the school coaches Shelby Metcalf, Norman Reuther and Bob Gobin have had by far the best recruiting year ever at A&M. The Aggies didn’t get any national recognition last year while some people thought they should but with the likes of Barry Davis, Sonny Parker, Ray Roberts and Gates Erwin returning and incoming freshmen like Lyndon Swanson, Karl Godine, Jarvis Williams, Joey Robinson, Bryan Holland and Bob Middleton, the defending South west Conference Champions should Pettaway’s play sparks Bell victory In an exhibition game Sunday, Mary Pettaway’s two touchdowns boosted the Philadelphia Bell past the Portland Thunder 30-21. Those two touchdowns might have earned Pettaway a more prominent posi tion on the World Football League club. Pettaway, a 5-foot-6, 160 pound cornerback, sprinted 91 yards in 10 seconds, scoring on a punt return. Later in the second quarter he in tercepted a pass from Don Horn and charged 59 yards for another touchdown. “Pettaway was with us last year but he didn’t play much, ’ said Joe Vardi, acting coach for the Bell. “He’s been beating the bushes (Continental and Canadian Football leagues) the last three or four years. “Last year I rode the bench until finally I just quit, said the 29 year old Pettaway. “The only two games that I got into, I was the Most Valu able Player. I don t know why I didn’t play more. By David Walker be able to take care of them selves. . . . Trying to find a coach around A&M this week is like trying to catch a fish in a bath tub. They are all at the Texas High School Coaches Association meetings in Fort Worth. Sports Editor Mike Bruton and I will be leaving for Cow Town this afternoon to see what’s going on and to report on Aggie footballers-to-be Eddie Hardin, George Woodard and Darrell Smith who will be playing in the all-star football game Thursday night in TCU’s Amon Carter Stadium .... One more thing about LSU tic kets, if you don’t have any don ’t call A&M ticket manager Euleta Miller. She can’t help you. She has already mailed out refunds to about 300 people who had ordered 2000 tic kets. Don’t call LSU, they can’t help you. You hadjust better be a Connie Alexander fan .... When the Houston Oilers cut veteran center Sid Smith Monday it made Rickey Seeker’s chances of sticking with the Oilers just that much better. Warren Trahan wasn’t as lucky with the Dallas Cowboys. He broke his wrist earlier in the week and was released by the Pokes My quote of the week comes from Darrell Royal of that famous school in Austin when asked about the Ag gies being picked to win the South west Conference this year, “I’m not sure that they didn’t have the best team around these parts last year. We beat them by a fairly large mar gin but I have never seen as many breaks in one game for one team. I don’t see how you could pick anyone else.” Sounds like Darrell has been looking at the schedule and happen to notice where he will be Thanksgiving. Gig ’em.
