Title IX, solution or problem?

The sex discrimination law, Title
IX, is now official and all the women
libbers throughout the nation are
probably shouting, HOORAY!!! But
they’d better think twice before get
ting overjoyed, because Title IX
could cause women’s athletics more
pain than pleasure, especially on a
collegiate level.

employment and athletics in all
school districts and universities that

by having football and basketball
revenues kept within those two
sports. Now look at what can hap
pen to women’s athletics and the
smaller sports in male competition.
Personally, I hope that this
doesn’t happen, because I want to
see women’s athletics upgraded. It
took time for male athletics to attain
the status that they enjoy today, and
it’ll take time for women’s athletics
to equal that status.

tomobile accident and needs blood

reement with the law as to sex dis
crimination, because I think all
forms of discrimination are wrong.
But when you take a look at col
legiate athletics, Title IX is & poten
tial problem. If interpreted strictly,
it means women’s athletics would
have to be treated equal to all forms
of male athletics, including money
makers like football and basketball.
In both these sports nearly all the
main participants (the athletes) re
ceive full scholarships. But the two
sports support the total athletic
programs in virtually all univer
sities, and in so doing they support
women’s programs in universities
that have such programs. To give
the female participants full scholar
ships in all their programs would do
funny things to the athletic budget
of almost any university. And we all
know that women’s athletics at pre
sent can’t draw enough revenue
even to support themselves.
In fact to give equal considera
tions to women’s sports would be
discrimination of sorts in itself.
Male golfers, swimmers, tennis
players and sometimes track and
field participants don’t receive full
scholarships, because they are
being supported by the bigger
sports, football and basketball. Why
should the women’s programs be
any different?
