LEA 822-1559 The word “professional” is reserved for those men whose actions are wholly devoted to the best interests of their clients. This builds the bridge so vital to any financial relationship: trust. If you are considering life insurance call a professional,> Mickey Lea . . . and be sure. .leffenson sranoara 3200 So. College Ave. P. O. Box 3667 Bryan, Texas 77801 2 lanes of highway 21 to be hydroplane track Brazos and Burleson County re sidents are going to have to sacrifice some highway space for science. The Texas Transportation (TTI) and the Department of Transporta tion will incorporate about 3,000 feet of Highway 21 in fiont of the TAMU Research Annex. The east- bound two lanes will be used as a test track for hydroplaning studies. An announcement by the Texas Highway Department reports “the construction shall consist of a . . . level-up by state maintenance forces, followed by the placement of a plant mix seal and subsequent skid testing and evaluation by TTI. The eastbound lane will be closed dur ing construction and test periods. The westbound lane will carry two-way traffic.’ The testing has been funded a total of $230,000 to evaluate the phenomenon of hydroplaning. At the completion of the study, TTI will make recommendations on the angle of slope of the road, the tex ture of the pavement surface and the geometries necessary to minimize hydroplaning. A rain simulator will be installed on the highway. When moving on a wet surface, a bow-wave forms in front of the tire and exerts pressure against it. As the force of the wave increases, the rate at which the tire spins may vary from the actual speed of the auto. This can mean that for an auto traveling at 60 miles per hour its tires may be spinning at only 10 mph. Researchers also claim that in tests they have seen tires reverse direction. The rotating speed of the tire is in reverse while the ground speed of the car remains the same. The hydroplaning effect is the same as water skiing. It can be fatal for drivers. A hydroplane trough will be con structed along with three designs of road-surface textures. Tests, to last several weeks, are to end in August. The highway then is to be returned to normal use.
