He is as mobile, but not quite as fast as Fields. He’s strong against the run and has also been known to make quarterbacks nervous when they drop back for a pass. Register expressed concern about a nagging knee injury that has bothered Dean from time to time. He said Dean’s knee was reinjured during the spring, but nothing seri ous enough to require surgery. “If his (Dean) leg is well he 11 be right there, the A&M coach said. On the flanks will be Schwarz and Marshall, who complement each other with two distinctly different types of play. Marshall uses his strength and plays with abandon, while Schwarz is more of a tactician and uses finesse. Register said Marshall was the most improved player of the four. “Tank (Marshall) has a real good spring,” he said. Marshall, 6-5 and 251, has seen considerable playing time and put it all together this spring and should do a fine job in the upcoming season. Rounding out the front four will be Schwarz, (6-2, 22U the midget of the quartet. He doesn’t weigh as much as his cohorts, but he plays as big as any of them. He’s extremely quick and contains very well. Register labeled Schwarz as the leader of the A&M front. And rightly so. The Houston Memorial product has three years experience. “He’s a smart player and he’s tough as the dickens and he’s a senior,” Register commented. Schwarz has also had some knee trouble in the past but last season and this spring it never showed. Apparently his legs are strong and he’ll be ready to go come Sep tember. Playing behind the first four will be Jerry Shannon (6-3, 224) and Richard Frey (6-2, 224) at the ends, with Steve Spitzenberger (6-3, 233) and David Bairrington (6-2, 249) at the tackles. Register said these players could help them next year if they work hard. He also commented that none of them has extensive experience and how well they perform is yet to be seen. One second-teamer who will be sorely missed is sophomore Ronnie Walker. Walker injured his knee in a skiing mishap and will probably be out for the season. He had a fine spring and the defensive coaches were really counting on him to put some depth in the front wall. If depth becomes a problem during the upcoming season, linebacker Jesse Hunnicutt can be moved to defensive end where he saw action during the 1974 season. Hunnicutt has steadily improved since last fall and is very capable of playing the flanks if needed. The defensive line won’t be a weakness for the 1975 Texas Aggies and if the first four stay healthy it may prove to be a strong point. vised Coaches All-America football game. “I know my arm is not as strong as a lot of guys, but I’ll just give it my best shot and hope for the best. Jeffrey, drafted by the Chargers in the final round, rode his glittering performance with the Bears last sea son into this annual summer-time duel. It will be his farewell contest under Grant Teaff, who coached Baylor to its first Southwest Confer ence championship in half a cen tury. “He’s really meant a lot to me, as an athlete for sure, but also as a person. I’m fortunate and thankful to have been with a man like him the last few years,” Jeffrey said. With the Chargers, his most im posing challenge is the strong arm of quarterback Dan Fouts. “He’s tall and lanky and though he’s not real big like Terry Brandshaw or Roman Gabriel, he’s got a strong arm. He’s more of a Sammy Baugh, and he can really throw the ball,” Jeffrey said. “I guess I’m probably a fair short range passer but I need to work for distance. Pressed somewhat, he admitted that within medium range, “I can pretty well hold my own with any one. No lesser authority than the Texas Longhorns can vouch for that. Jeffrey threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third in a second half uprising last fall that took the Bears to a 34-24 victory and propelled them toward the Cotton Bowl.
