Coaches prepare for All-America Game

Pacific and ranks 9th on the NCAA
career rushing list with 3,324 yards
in three years. The 6-0,
180-pounder was a first-team All-
Pacific Coast performer and was
second-team Associated Press
All-America. He was fourth in the
nation in rushing last year averag
ing 130.8 yards per game and set a
Hula Bowl rushing record with 156
yards in the January classic. Har
rell was also selected “Most Valu
able Player” for the West in the
East-West Shrine Game. He was
drafted by Green Bay in the third
round.
Winfrey was an All-Southland
Conference selection at Arkansas
State rushing for over 500 yards
his senior year. The 6-1,
215-pound fullback, who is noted
for his excellent blocking ability,
was drafted by Miami in the second
round.
The offensive linemen signed
include Al Simpson, Colorado
State; Marvin Crenshaw, Neb
raska; Geoff Reece, Washington
State; and Hank Englehardt, Uni
versity of the Pacific.
The 6-5, 260-pound Simpson
was a three-year starter for Col
orado State and was an Honorable
Mention All-Western Athletic Con
ference performer last year at of
fensive tackle. He was selected by
teammates as the outstanding
lineman on the team last year after
being a mainstay in the offensive
line that blocked for the nation’s top
passing team. Simpson is the first
Colorado State player to play in the
All-America Game.
Crenshaw anchored the offen
sive line that blocked for All-
American quarterback David
Humm. Drafted by Pittsburgh in the
sixth round the 6-6, 240-pound
tackle was named to the Kodak,
UPI, and Football News All-
American teams and was a con
sensus All-Big Eight selection. He
was a two-year starter for the Cor-
nhuskers, playing in three Bowl
Games while at Nebraska.
Reece was a two-time All-Pacific
Eight selection and was named to
the first-team on both the Walter
Camp Foundation and the Time
Magazine All-American squads at
center. Picked by Los Angeles in
the third round, Reece is known as
one of the outstanding centers in
the country. The 6-4, 245-pounder
broke his hand in the first game of
the 1974 a seasoiT'ahd snapped
left-handed for several games
while the hand healed.
An All-Pacific Coach Athletic
Association performer at the Uni
versity of the Pacific, Englehardt
anchored the offensive line that al
lowed Pacific to average 265 yards
rushing per game. He was a starter
at tackle as a junior and moved to
center his senior year. The 6-4,
240-pounder was selected by De
nver in the 10th round.
The tight end signing to play for
the West is Russ Francis of the
University of Oregon. Francis had
39 career receptions for 587 yards
while at Oregon, a 15-yard per
catch average. He was selected by
New England in the first round.
Heading the list of defensive
signees are defensive backs
Charles Phillips, University South
ern California; Barry Hill, Iowa
State; Mike Russell, Brigham
Young; Tim Gray, Texas A&M; and
Glenn Lott, Drake.
While at USC Phillips estab
lished an NCAA record for most
interception return yardage in a
season picking up 302 yards on
seven returns last year. The future
Oakland Raider also led the Pac 8
in interceptions with seven and
was named to the Football Writers
All-American team as well as being
selected All-Pacific Coast. Trojan
coach John McKay has said,
“Charles Phillips is one of the best
defensive backs I’ve ever been
around. He can do everything.”
Hill, a unanimous All-Big Eight
selection, set conference records
for career interceptions (21), inter
ceptions in a season (9), and inter
ceptions in a game (4). The 6-1,
190-pound safety was drafted by
Miami.
A two-year starter at Brigham
Young, Russell had 11 career in
terceptions and was named to the
first-team All-Western Athletic
Conference last year. The 5-11,
177-pounder led the team in pass
deflections his junior and senior
years.
Tim Gray, the number one draft
choice of St. Louis, will also be in
Teaff’s defensive secondary. He
was an All-Southwest Conference
last year and was named to the
third-team AP All-American unit.
The 6-1, 200-pound cornerback is
known as an exceptionally hard hit
ter. He made 24 unassisted tackles
his senior year.
An All-Missouri Valley per
former, Lotts was drafted by Buf
falo in the second round. The 6-2,
205-pounder is noted for his ag
gressive play and sure tackling.
The linebackers are Rod
Shoate, University of Oklahoma
and Tom Henderson, Langston
(Okla.).
The 6-1,213-pound Shoate was
a two-year Consensus All-
American and was named to sev
eral All-American teams his
sophomore year. A second-round
pick of New England, he had 420
career tackles at Oklahoma and
was named AP National Lineman
of the Week three times in his
career. A punishing tackier, he was
named Big Eight Sophomore of the
Year in 1972 and was one of four
finalists for the Vince Lombardi
Trophy, symbolizing the nation’s
top lineman.
Henderson was the “Defensive
Player of the Year” in the Ok
lahoma Collegiate Conference and
was selected to the AP, UPI and
NAIA All-American squads. He led
Langston in tackles three years
from his defensive end spot but will
probably be moved to linebacker
as a pro. At 6-3, 225, Henderson
has run the 40-yard dash in 4.5
seconds and the 100-yard dash in
9.6 seconds.
The final defensive lineman sign
ing with the West is Texas Tech’s
Tommy Cones. An All-Southwest
Conference selection at defensive
end, Cones was named the As
sociated Press Defensive “Player
of the Week” following the SMU
game where he blocked a punt to
set up Tech’s winning touchdown.
Rice’s talented placekicker Alan
Pringle rounds out the West roster.
Raised in Venezuela, the 6-0,
190-pounder had never seen a
football game until a freshman in
college. After walking-on at Rice,
Pringle hit 27 of 28 PAT’s and 20 of
29 field goal attempts in his career
as an Owl. The tenth round draft
choice of the Houston Oilers holds
the school record for the longest
field goal with a 59-yarder.
