Ferns share state all-sports title
By DEBBIE LACEY
Staff Sports Writer
In the three years that Texas
&M has had a women’s sports
rogram, this year has proved to be
e best.
Under the direction of Kay Don,
women’s athletic director, the
women accumulated 38 points along
with Texas Women’s University and
Texas to become co-champs for the
all-sports title of Texas for 1975. A
traveling trophy was awarded to
A&M after the spring semester
ended and the points were tabu
lated.
The Texas Association for Inter
collegiate Athletics for Women
awards the trophy to school that
scores the most points by finishing
in the top four places at a state level.
“Mr. Consistent”, Shifton Baker will be hoping to peak at the NCAA Track and Field Championships
at Provo, Utah. Also competing in the 120 high hurdles for A&M will be Scottie Jones.

Matthews
hurts hand
in incident
CHICAGO (AP) — San Francisco
Giants left fielder Gary Matthews
was fighting, perhaps playfully,
with teammate Derrel Thomas
when he broke his left thumb, it was
reported Monday.
The injury occurred in Montreal
before Sunday s game with the
Expos. It was explained that Matth
ews was hurt in a pepper game;
Teammates later said there was a
“scuffle’ on the field during batting
practice.
“ They were only fooling around
but I saw trouble might come out of
it, said outfielder Von Joshua.
Manager Wes Westrum said the
Giants probably would try to trade
for another outfielder. Matthews,
the team’s cleanup hitter, will he
out at least six weeks.
The scoring is as follows; 1st place
(10 points), 2nd place (8 points), 3rd
place (6 points) and 4th place (4
points).
A&M scored in softball, placing
second to TWU. In bowling the
women won the team title with
West Texas State finishing second
and Brenda Goldsmith was second
medalist in the golf competition be
hind a Texas coed. A&M finished
second behind Texas in swimming
to round out the scoring. The Aggie
coeds also had teams in basketball
and volleyball to make it to the state
competition but failed to finish in
the top four.
Goldsmith will be entered in na
tional golfing competition on June
15. Other A&M coeds who have
competed on a national level are:
Carol Hemphill, Beth McArthur
and Barbara German for swimming
and Lucy Neiman and Sandra
Lyman for the discus competition in
track and field.

Signing of three California prospects
to A&M scholarships.
The three are Blake Hinman and
Roger Lien from San Jose and Bill
Yates from Santa Clara.
Hinman, who attended West Val
ley Junior College, earned all-
America honors in water polo and
will swim in the distance freestyle
for A&M. Lien, a freshman from
Santa Clara High, earned all-
America honors in the middle dis
tance and distance freestyle. Yates,
whose brother Jim is on the Aggie
swim team, was all-America two
years in swimming and water polo.
TV causes
scheduling
scrambles
Athletic Director Emory Bellard
has announced two changes in Texas
A&M’s 1975 football schedule, both
for television commitments.
The Sept. 27 game here with
Illinois will be on regional TV and
the kickoff will he at 12:50 p.m. in
stead of the original 4 p.m.
And, the Arkansas game, origi
nally set for 1 p.m., Nov. 1, in
Fayetteville, has been switched to
3:05 p.m., Dec. 6, in Little Rock. It
will be on national TV.
all-sports championship only while
their title is intact, is presently sit
ting in Don’s office and will be
moved to the trophy case in G. Rol-
lie White Coliseum in the near fu
ture. The award is silver and walnut
and stands 3% feet high with a
figurine of Mildred “Babe Didrick-
son Zaharias at the top. “I think it’s a
great honor for the women of Texas
A&M University to receive this
award, Don said.
This all-sports trophy was named
in honor of the “Babe and was do
nated by the Rotary Club of Beaum
ont. Zaharias was the first Texas
woman to go to the Olympics. She
was outstanding in golf, track and
swimming. She played semi-pro
basketball and a couple of innings
with the New York Yankees.
The trophy, in its second year of
existence, was held by Stephen F.
Austin last year. A&M tied with
SMU for ninth place in 1974 in the
all-sports scoring. From ninth to
first this year is quite an accomp
lishment. “The girls have done a lot
of hard work and they represented
Texas A&M very well,” Don said.
Maybe next year A&M can place
first without a tie. “I expect to see
even more improvement next year.
We have some good athletes return
ing and some good ones coming in,”
Don added. “I would like to see
A&M place in all sports at a state
level next year,” she concluded.
Other top finishers were: SEA
(2nd), Lamar (3rd), and UH (4th).
