ABC turns SWC football schedule around

As you probably know by now,
the A&M-Arkansas football game
has been moved from November 1
in Fayetteville to December 6 in
Little Rock. What you probably
didn’t know was that it wasn’t the
first time that the game had been
moved.
It’s a long, drawn out story, so
here we go.
The way the Southwest Confer
ence schedule works out, A&M and
Texas both go to the Ozarks in the
same year. The stadium in Little
Rock holds more people, $30,000
more than the one in Fayetteville.
The two schools alternate every
other trip playing in the larger
stadium.
By contract this was A&M s year
to play in Little Rock but Darrell
Royal (Texas
has a certain number of games in
Little Rock and Fayetteville and
that can’t be changed. So move the
Texas game from Little Rock back
to Fayetteville where it was sup
posed to be in the first place. Now
we re set.
No, not quite.
What about the tickets? It’s too
late to have new tickets printed.
The Aggie-Razorback tickets won’t
fit in the Little Rock stadium and
the TU-AU tickets won’t fit in the
Fayetteville stadium. There is only
one solution. Use the A&M-AU
tickets for the AU-TU game and the
AU-TU tickets for the A&M-AU
game. Ouch!
It has to be done that way but
you can just imagine how insulted
Aggies and Longhorns are going to
be when they get their tickets.
Don t call the ticket office and
complain when you get your tickets,
it wasn’t their fault. Call Darrell
and Frank — they’re the ones that
made the boo-boo.

There were two other changes in
the Aggie schedule because of TV.
The Illinois game was changed from
a 4 pm kickoff to a 12:50 kickoff for
regional TV. The other change was
the Texas game. It was changed
from 1:30 November 27 to that old
familiar “date and time to be an
nounced. The date will either be
the 27th or 28th, but it all depends
on you-know-who, TV.

The changing of the Aggie-
Arkansas game may mean more
than just a change of date and a
funny ticket. It means that the
Texas game isn’t the last game of
the year. This changes the wqhole
complection of the game. Now it
doesn’t have that big “last game”
importance. If everything goes on
schedule (for the Aggies and ABC)
the biggest game will be the follow
ing week. The fact that the change
leaves the Aggies with their “most
important” game (Arkansas) last
should change things psychological
ly, and that’s a big boost.
The change also creates a rarity
in that the Aggie footballers and
basketballers will be playing the
same day.
While the FB’ers are in Arkansas
the BB’ers will be in friendly G.

While on the subject of football
and tickets it seems that the Aggies
8-3 season last year and prospects
for an even better one this year
have given ticket sales a shot in the

two schools played in Little Rock
it would be more attractive to the
TV folks, and everyone tries their
best for the TV folks.
So the schedule was finalized
with the Aggies getting the short
end of the stick. Along with the
short end of the stick they also got
a trip to Fayetteville. The Long
horns were set for Little Rock all
primed and ready for national TV.
One of the first things that is done
after the schedule is “set” is to have
tickets printed. So now we have
53,555 tickets printed for War
Memorial Stadium in Little Rock
for Texas and Arkansas and 43,500
printed for Razorback Stadium in
Fayetteville for A&M and Arkansas.
Now, switch number one is final.
It’s time for number two.
While TU and AU are all set wait
ing for the big call from ABC some
thing happened in New York. In
stead of calling Broyles and Royal
they called Broyles and a fella
named Bellard.
The voice on the other end of the
line said something to the effect of,
“It sure would be nice if you guys
were playing each other in Little
Rock instead of Fayetteville. It
would be just a really good game
for national TV. We even think that
it will be such an important game
we want yon to move it to the final
weekend of the season. ”
Well you don’t say no to the TV
people and change number two was
made. Sorry Daddy D you can’t win
’em all.
There is one little problem left.

Texas A&M football coach Emory
Bellard has received an Academy
Award trophy for having invented
the Wishbone formation.
The trophy, a gold cup, came
from the Academy of American
Football in Santa Paula, Calif., and
was presented to Bellard by Texas
A&M President Dr. Jack K. Wil
liams.
“Naturally, I’m pleased,” Bellard
said. “It signifies recognition of a
contribution made and it is a
documentation. I think people in all
professions are interested in making
contributions in their chosen field.

fourth season as head coach at Texas
A&M, drew up the Wishbone for

Coach Bob Ellis announced today
that Texas A&M s five-man squad in
the NCAA Golf Championships at
Columbus, Ohio, June 25-28 will be
the same as that which won a
36-hold qualifying meet last Wed
nesday in Austin.
The group of Bobby Baker, Steve
Whiteside, Monte Schauer, Larry
Gorzyeki and Clay Dozier fired a
586 Wednesday to win the remain
ing spot open for district five. Hous
ton Baptist had a 610, Louisiana
Tech a 615 and Rice a 616. Baker
had a two-under par 140, Whiteside
and Schauer, Itoth 146, Gorzyeki
154 and Dozier 156, the latter with
four penalty strokes.
Texas, Houston and SMU are the
other three teams from district five
that will play in the NCAA tourna
