Tied for MVP honors
Irving, McGinnis heads
ABA All-Star balloting
NEW YORK (AP) — Julius Erv-
ing and George McGinnis, who
shared the American Basketball
Association’s most valuable player
award for the 1974-75 season, head
the ABA All-Star team announced
Monday.
Erving, of the New York Mets,
and McGinnis, who played for In
diana last season, were unanimous
choices in the balloting by writers
and broadcasters in the 10 ABA
cities.
Completing the first team were
center Artis Gilmore of the champ
ion Kentucky Colonels, and guards
Mack Calvin of the Denver Nuggets
and Ron Boone of the Utah Stars.
McGinnis, who signed a con
troversial contract with the New
York Knicks of the National Basket
ball Association last Friday, led the
ABA in scoring with 29.8 points per
game during the regular season and
32.3 in the playoffs.
Erving, named to the All-Star
team for the third straight year,
finished second to McGinnis in scor
ing and was among the league lead
ers in five other individual depart
ments.
Gilmore was the MVP of the
playoffs and made the first team for
the fourth consecutive season. He
received 58 of a possible 60 votes.
Calvin, like McGinnis, Erving
and Gilmore, was a repeat choice.
He led the ABA in assists and free
throw percentage.
Boone made the first team for the

He was the ABA’s third best scorer
during the regular season with a
25.2 average and extended his
ironman string to 84 games. He has
never missed a game since joining
the league.
Selected for the second team
were forwards George Gervin and
Marvin Barnes of St. Louis, center
Swen Nater of San Antonio, and
guards Brian Taylor of New York
and James Silas of San Antonio.
Seven sign
with A&M
track team
Coach Charles Thomas an
nounced Friday that Texas A&M
has signed seven track and field
prospects to athletic scholarships.
The group includes six high
school seniors and Craig McPhail, a
hurdler from Ranger Junior College
who attended A&M as a freshman
but flunked out. McPhail was an
all-America JC 440 hurdler this sea
son, getting second in the national
JC meet with a 51.2 clocking.
The six high school seniors in
clude:
Tony Wheeler of Durban, South
Africa, who had a 47.6 in the
440-yard dash and a 1:48.6 in the
880-yard run.
Tommy Glass of Odessa Permian
who won the 880 in the regional
meet in 1:52.9 and who placed fifth
in the state meet in 1:53.5.
Steve Stewart of Fort Worth
Richland who won the 4A state dis
cus with a throw of 192 feet.
Harold Bilker of Corrigan, Tex.,
who won the state 2A high hurdles
and who was nationally ranked in
that event with a best time of 13.8.
Ronnie Keys of Kilgore who won
the state 3A high jump as a junior
with a leap of 6-10 and who cleared
6-8 as a senior.
Walter Jachimowicz of Wood-
bridge, Va., who was the Virginia
state champion in both the 880 and
mile during his junior year. He had
best times of 1:53.1 and 4:12.3. He
was injured most of his senior year
but did compete in the 880 at the
state meet.
