Netmen
compete
for crown
By MIKE BRUTON
Sports Editor
While Southwest Conference
championship golf and track and
field competition is going on this
weekend, the Texas A&M tennis
team will also be in battle for the
crown in their specialty.
The Aggies will take five players
to the SWC title tournament to be
held at the Lubbock Racquet Club.
The five A&M racqueteers are Billy
Hoover, Bill Wright, Charles
Emley, Tom Courson and Mark Sil-
berman.
A&M’s Wright has to be consi
dered as a favorite in the singles
battle, especially with the absence
of Hardie. Hoover can t be counted
out as he was a finalist in the tour
nament a year ago.
Other singles favorites
are: Houston’s Ross Walker, Texas
Gary Flock and Baylor’s Danny
Dobbs.
In the doubles fight Texas looks
strong with two teams amongst the
favorites. The Horns will have Flock
and Graham Whaling who posted a
5-0 in SWC play this spring on one
team and Stewart Keller and Gon-
zalo Nunez (4-2) on the other. Also
favored in the doubles competition
Houston’s Walker and Dale Ogden.
If Ogden should win with Walker,
he’ll become the tenth three-time
doubles champ in SWC history. He
won with Lee Merry in 1973 and 74-
With SMU not in the match Texas
and Houston are obviously the
teams with the top seeded individu
als. Houston’s Walker defeated
Mustang Hardie in team-match
singles the past two years, losing
only one set. He also posted a 6-1
SWC record this spring, losing only
to the Longhorn’s Flock who had an
identical record.
Coach Richard Barker will have
Hoover, Wright, Emley, and Cour
son in the singles matches and
Hoover-Emley (4-3) and Wright-
Mark Silberman (1-6) in the dou
bles.
